Thread: What does Napier want to see from Cajun defense?

  1. UL Football What does Napier want to see from Cajun defense?

Four things to watch when UL visits Texas State on Saturday night

    #1 THE UL DEFENSE
Coach Billy Napier is looking for a lot from a struggling defense when UL visits Texas State.

So see if any or all of this gets done:

“I want to eliminate mental errors. I want to eliminate alignment issues,” Napier said. “I want to play with ... better eye discipline in the back end, better gap integrity in the front seven.

I want to eliminate wide open guys running around our secondary and seeing if we can get anyone to bother the QB while he is eating dinner in the pocket and taking his time looking down the defense.

Room for lots and lots and lots of improvement available in this statement

coach Napier doesn't have much to work with boy's...he doesn't have 22 football players on the roster. Hud left the cupboard bare...gonna get ugly as we go on...

We had the same guys to work with last year and 5 wins got HUD fired. Napier may not have a ton to work with but its comparable to what the previous staff did. How about we got our renowned D coordinator to dial up a blitz or some pressure? That would be nice.

My very simplified uneducated view of defense is... if your player personnel and scheme are adequate to play base defense... you do. But if that base defense isn't getting stops... you risk giving up the big play... and you start giving the green light to shoot gaps, wreak havoc, pressure the backfield and try and snuff the play. If playing soft coverage results in systematic first downs leading to scores... I'd not go full man to man with our personnel. I'd try variations of zone using my head on who, when, where and why.

I know we are in a year of personnel limitations... but there's always a stud or two in the mix. We need them to step up in SBC play.

Anyway, back to the defense. With a brutal 3 game stretch coming up against App State, ASU and Troy and two of those being on the road, we are going to have to figure something out quickly if we don't want to get destroyed in all three of them. That could be an ugly stretch without better defensive play.

Even if defense, plays to it’s potential we will still have to be great on offense to win. That is because the defense simply does not gave enough god given talent to be successful.

The best talent on defense is very young (freshmen) or inexperienced at the position (Jacquet at corner). Ja cquet is improving and is going to be a good one.

The question is whether we really even have talent in the secondary. At one time, 3 of our 4 starting DB's were walk ons and the other was a position change. We are brutal back there and the three headed monster we will face after NMSU will be a scary proposition.
