Thread: Glad Hud is in UL's rearview miror.

  1. UL Football Glad Hud is in UL's rearview miror.

I've had the chance to mull a few things over about the Louisiana vs Mississippi State game, past and future. I feel better.

With 26 seniors on the other side of the ball equaling 1/3 of your entire scholarship lineup, the outcome was not surprising.

When you can only sign 25 in any given year, having 26 seniors is sort of a feat. Their experience level will be dramatically different next year. Should be interesting.

In preparing for the Cajuns, Mississippi State had an individual in Hud that knew LA player tendencies better (perhaps) than even the current Louisiana staff, up to a point.

Hud may be the TE coach there, but at least for Saturday, he was their game coordinator.

UL may never have to face those disadvantages again, a mere 2 games into the season. A year from now their advantage weakens dramatically.

I'm not nearly as disappointed in the loss as I was Saturday.

I knew going in that we didn't have the horses to compete yet, but I was still hoping for a better showing. I just hope that the promising future of commits don't waiver because of this game or season. If they stick to their guns, the future is bright.

I'm sure our future recruits know they coming in with a great chance to play right away.

Exactly....I was going to say the same thing. Our recruits have bought into the coaching staff, and the cULture change. I think they are totally aware of what we are now, and want to be a part of getting us to that next level.

Good points Turbine. We saw effort. We saw discipline, we saw grit and we an aggressive coach that knew taking chances was our only hope to keep it closer.

We didn't see enough execution on a few critical plays, we didn't see enough speed and power at times, but we also didn't see quit or confusion or stupid penalties.

I'm quite happy with the state of our program. Let's get behind them this Saturday and show solid support!

Do they return their qb? If not, that's huge for the first game next year.

No, Fitzgerald is a senior. But their backup is very talented as well.

Grambling's 2 QBs with zero starting experience ran on us.....we have a wide open hole being exploited that needs to be plugged by our defense. Just not sure how we fix this with current personnel.

Their backup QB is good, but what is huge is that they will have to replace 13-15 other starters that are seniors!

One thing I noticed is that the State center did not need help with any of our NT’s. This allowed the guards freedom to go to the second level to block. I really want to see how our NT do against a lesser opponent. If they struggle this week, it could be another long season for the defense.

I don’t know why people were expecting us to improve overnight. Hud’s first year was a fluke. Bustle left him a good team, he stole away some really good MSU recruits, and we still eked by and won a bunch of miracle games. This is not the kind of thing that happens every time a new coach comes in.

This is a rebuilding process. Napier had little time to recruit. This year won’t tell us much about how well coach Napier will do. A game against Grambling or MSU will tell us even less.

Saban lost to ULM his first year at Alabama. Sit back and relax guys. It will be a minute before we can start panicking/rejoicing.

.......I go back to my pre game post of needing a “Spy’ Type defense on their QB.....prediction becomes reality!!!
