BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - As the state trims its spending, the cuts to Louisiana's government work force are going beyond early retirements, attrition and elimination of vacant jobs.

Prison guards, health workers, attorneys, pharmacists, clerical staff and mid-level bureaucrats have gotten pink slips, and more are expected in the upcoming budget year that begins July 1.

Of the 2,976 jobs Gov. Bobby Jindal proposes to cut next year, an estimated one-third of those are currently filled, including hundreds of jobs in the state health department that would disappear as the department continues to privatize and consolidate state-run health facilities.
