Wouldn’t put it past our politicians and every rep in the state other than the Acadiana delegation would vote for it. Hence crooked politicians.
There is the concept of "ex post facto law" which should prevent the legislature from now enacting a law to make illegal conduct or status which was legal when it was taken.

The legislature moved in haste when enacting the 2 university requirement as it did not at that time provide for the consequences of one latter deciding to go back to its original name or another name which would result in there being less than two University of Louisiana schools or provide in the law that once a university joins with another to have the "University of Louisiana" name, it legally can't go back to another name without permission from the legislature. Hard facts make bad law. Too bad for them. Under the concept of "ex post facto laws" the legislature would not now be able to remedy the actions (enactment of a bad law by them) taken in haste.

Furthermore, I am not sure how the legislature would have even come up with a law that would reasonably address what happens when one changes it mind. That would create a situation were the tail would always be in a position to wag the dog.

It is much more complicated than simply aquiring the properties/capital from the state. What about items such retirement/pensions liability particularly for tenured faculty? That is a tough hurdle.

This is an intriguing idea to me, going to a private university. Can anyone provide me an example of any public institution that became private? I would like to read up on it.

I found an article about 5 years ago saying Oregon, Oregon State and Portland State were all going private, but it doesn't look like they did. Also found that UVA remained public, but somehow broke free of the Commonwealth oversight.

I believe Tulane was at one time public in it's early years and went private but that was probably a long time ago.

There is even one individual that sits on our RCAF board who asked TJoe to “drop the name thing” because it was causing unrest amongst his buddies in BR.
I don't doubt that he faces hurdles but I will not label him the savior of anything.

How would this free us up to purchase that property? Its north of $18 million with ground leases on the MOB's in the front...

What we need isn't to be private, but to be like Temple University. They have a lot more autonomy than most public universities. Of course this is Louisiana where we simply love to control everything so we are beholding to our political gods of the day be they Republican, Democrat, or whatever evolves.

Under a certain level of funding, a degree of autonomy is an interesting concept.

If enacted, it seems like UL would already qualify.

No we don’t. Every region with a university would vote for it to force us back “in our place”.

I have black shirts too none of them say UL or Ragin Cajuns them. That would make absolutely no sense what so ever. I do have something that say NO saints on them, and that makes all the sense in the world. However I do not have any saints shirts that are red. You see how that works, it’s not real hard to figure out, although some people really struggle with it.
