WASHINGTON (AP) - The Internet isn't a government entity, rather a network of interconnected computer systems. But industry experts say the U.S. government needs to take a more active role in making sure that the Internet remains secure. The analysts note as business and government rely more on the Internet, the threat of a serious attack continues to grow. The industry leaders who spoke to Congress compare the digital age to the automobile age. They say the government can provide the kind of oversight that the government did back in the 1960s and 70s to make things like safety belts and other equipment mandatory so the highways would be safer.
