Thread: Technically ULS has no "Flagship" (+USN&WR)

Default Technically ULS has no "Flagship" (+USN&WR)

But if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, its probably a duck.

I read on another social media outlet, that this is more money in research grants, awarded to UL than the rest of the System combined. Everyone knows the Fossil hated athletics, but I seem to remember him saying how important the name was when applying for research dollars. Looks like he was right.

Yeah....this is realy big news for us. And once we get the R1 status it will bew very hard indeed to see who the 'flagship' for ULS is. And most certainly the 2nd best in state.

    Actions speak louder than legislation.

Actually I was the one that originally posted that here on RP after I did the research. I'm a numbers guy....but it wouldn't be the first time that others (including the media) have used my research for their stories... :-)

I was actually pretty shocked with the numbers however I believe it does show the different missions of the universities.

"Including institutional support and externally generated funds, UL Lafayette spent $100.98 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2017. The total amount places it among the top 25 percent of U.S. colleges and universities in terms of research and development funding."

But, but, US News & World Reports...............

    wow, great post...

    but this is confusing:
"Louisiana Tech's Strategic Plan, Tech 2020, identifies Research and Development as an overarching theme, with the following strategic priorities:

    1. Assess current research policies and procedures relative to increasing research success.

    2. Improve data driven decision making and research, technology transfer, and graduate studies.

    3. Increase research success.

Within these priorities, our goals are to:

Work with the deans, faculty and staff to triple our annual research expenditures to $50M per year with $20M per year federal."

they need to triple just to get to half of us?? but but but tier one...

The problem is the Fossil really didn't get us closer to Tier 1 status with all the cuts to athletics over the years. He was a disappointment on both levels. Dr. Savoie has invested in hiring the right people raise funds for Research Development.

The net growth by UL in past two years is more than LTURd's best year.....ever. We are now lapping them 3x per year....working on lap #4.

    Very Flagshippy

Have you guys ever researched exactly what Tier 1 Status means? I tried it once, and finally gave up, because, at least when I tried it, there was no concrete definition. The best I could come up with are some screwy criteria generated by US News & World Report.

R3, R2, R1 Carnegie Research Status, on the other hand, quite easy to define.

Someone do us a favor and try to get a firm definition of what Tier 1 means. I'm too old to try again so I'll hang up and listen.

I should add, Tier 1 status was the phraseology that the necksters always used when measuring themselves in the mirror. It was meaningless in my humble opinion other than they had it because it was mentioned in a magazine. Carnegie Research Status is the real measure when one wants to compare accomplishments nationwide against other universities.

Try this site, SACS. They set the criteria and is more important than US NEWS.

This is entirely correct..... but..... It is senseless to fail to report appropriate numbers to USNWR to get their Tier 1 status, regardless of how you feel about thdir rankings.
