I hope you are correct. Our terrible d lost several of its best players from last year and we do not have a proven QB or kicker. I would consider the team HUD took over superior in talent to this one at most positions. Our receivers are solid, but compared to Pee Wee, Lawson and Sturgent?

If Napier wins 7 games he is a rock star and will disprove my theory that talent > coaching.

Georgia State has the best player in the SBC in Hart, one the best defenses in the league and finished last season going 7-3 with a Bowl win.

Coastal finished last season with a 1 point loss at Arkansas followed be going 2-1 the rest of the way in SBC play.

We always get a good game from NMSU.

Texas State is very young, but have you noticed their commit list? That staff is doing work, and at the end of the 3rd quarter last season we were only up 14-7 on them.

We're going into the season with a porous defense and a mystery at QB. We could go 8-4 or 4-8. The same will probably be true for 2019 as well with a probable true Fr. at QB.

We can not preach patience and perspective enough these next 2 seasons.

The DL has the most talent since juice & Ringo

LB will also be a strong group

DBs will get me nightmares though

WR class is just as talented if Ray can transition quickly watch out

We also have the best stable of backs in school history

OL will be a question mark

Kicking game should be fine with Pfau

If we stay healthy at CB we will be fine.

Offensive Line is fine, only question is Left Tackle. Coaches love this group.
Hunt, Dotson, Prudhomme, Marks, (Robinson or Wade) Depth is a concern.

The WR's group doesn't need Dion Ray to be talented. Barnes, Bradley and Malone are darn good. You add Patterson, Jalen Williams, Harrison, Gossett, Bell and Jacquet at times. That's good talent and deep.

Cb's will be young outside of Johnson and Safety has some depth concerns, not numbers.

DL is a mixture of Upperclassmen like Kidd, Haggins, McDowell and Booker. Youth follows with Hill, Ochoa, Porter, Mapieu and Landry. We don't need injuries at this position.

Pfau has never won a kicking job outright at Oklahoma or LSU. But he can't be any worse than our PK the last two seasons.

Bottom line, we need to stay healthy and develop that second group on the depth chart, which will be in flux as they decide which freshmen to redshirt and play.

Overall, I agree with the assessment that Hud came in with more talent, and he had the benefit of much lower expectations as well.

That having been said, the talent gap isn't so wide that the task is impossible. And if you believe, as I do, that this coaching staff is much better then I do not think that 8-4 is out of the question.

Hud really should have been 7-5, but miraculously pulled out the win against ULM. Also won a super ugly game at Kent State.

So, hold serve at home and go 2-2 on the road in conference (Texas St, ULM, Troy & App State) and we are 8-4. Yes, Arkansas State will be tough at home especially coming off that road game at App State, but even if we go 1-2 in that tough three game stretch, we have a path to at least 7 wins.

From what I’ve heard out of camp, position groups are something like this:

    Best groups on the team:
    1 - WR
    2 - DL
    3 - OL
    4 - RB
    5 - LB

    These things encourage me.

That is encouraging. Last year it was WR et RB at 1-2. Then LS at 3. Everything else tied for 10th.

I think this team will be better immediately.

But so will South Alabama. New Mexico State will be at least as good. ULM (if Evans stays upright) will be very tough to beat.

My point is, the other guys get to play too. And some of them will be better than they were a year ago....and that includes teams that beat us last year.

South Al has no run game terrible options at QB and a DL that was horrid and have done little to address it outside of adding McWilliams

NMST will be fighting for #128 they lost their all time rush leader and had the worst recruiting class in the country the past few years.

If we lose to either Napier needs to start packing his bags.

Lannister as the Athletic Director of UL would be a pretty amazing reality show.
