Im pretty sure most QB’s would be licking their chops with good protection regardless of the play call. You either are good at LT or you aren’t..there is no..this guy can hold for short routes and screens...the other teams best DE will burn you and kill your QB. You don’t think we will have to ever go down field in a season? Our QB’s have spent the last 3 years running for their lives or getting hit. The left side will be improved, if this staffs plan going into the season is to have a weak left side and dink and dunk we hired the wrong guy. I don’t think we hired the wrong guy. We will have the road graders on the right and pass protection on the left.
I will be watching this OL group closely. If we have an OL like the past few years a winning season is probably unattainable. I really hope we have upgraded the tackle spots so we can run passing routes that take longer to develop.
UL’s O-line will need to show vast improvements in pass blocking if this team hopes to surpass preseason predictions. If Nunez is the starting QB, his biggest flaw last season was holding onto the ball for too long. He won’t stay healthy for long if that trend stays the same.
With good protection that becomes a strength. When you have no protection it will appear the QB is holding on to it too long. A good QB has a clock in his head of how long the plays take to develope, it’s wasn’t his fault the OL’s clock was half of that. I rather a guy who isn’t scared to take the hit and holds onto it to let the play develope than one who chunks it early because he is scared to take a hit. It’s probabky the most used cliches of the game but there is a reason coaches use them, “it all starts up front” “Games are won in the trenches” and it’s true on both sides of the ball.
The Elijah Mitchell and third down questions I suggested were asked. Here are the answers. Mitchell did participate and was tackled to the ground. He apparently did well and came out injury free. Third down work did occur and the first teams did very well in that regard which is to be expected. He wished the 2nd units would have been more effective. When the top units went against each other, his answer was they each had their moments.
