Napier's first media day 'polite, restricted'

The reporter took a negative angle, maybe his blood sugar was dropping. I guess they expect to be entertained by the coaches. No reason for the coaches to spill every detail of the program and players. Part of the culture change. There will be many more press conference this season for the reporters to ask questions.

Obviously, Napier and staff aren't in any hurry to tip their hand on anything happening prior to camp. TDA has basically filed one story a day, with little fresh info with the exception being today with a story on kickers, including OU transfer. Contrast that with the Advoate (its not a fair comparison,but it's all I got) there have been 12+ stories filed about state u, over the last few days this past week...NP is not like broadcast, where station are slaves to the clock, you can always add or update stories, especially on line. Its difficult to create any buzz for the program to the average guy with just one story a day. Napier may be expecting more out of local media...maybe he's pizzzed about coverage (or lack of) between the conference presser and the opening of camp...At Bama and Clemson, the coverage is all day everyday, just about 365 days a year...one story a day ain't cutting it, and that includes the ul coverage from Dan Mac...although he did have a decent article there this am.

Like most "journalists" he wanted to dictate the course of the interview, and was disappointed and somewhat snarkey when Napier and crew were focused, organized and disciplined; sort of like we want coaches and soldiers to be. That reporter wouldnt be invited to a second Nick Saben interview.

No one is happy being told how to do their job and at this rate, there won't be anyone left to attend. Of course, if you get rid of everyone else, you're in control. I think it's clear Napier wants to limit the press his first opening fall to keep things close to the vest. I realize that makes it tough to write articles and update practices, but he is doing what most new coaches do when they take over a program. I'd be surprised if the policies remain the same long term. JMO

Im really confused as to your point, so if a coach dictates the course of an interview he is a control freak. If the reporter dictates it he is just doing his job. “Nobody likes being told how to do their job” but part of a coaches job is to give interviews and a reporter trying to dictate that is trying to tell that coach how to do his job. It’s becoming quite clear why coaches and reporters don’t care for each other.

Media Day is mostly about one-on-one interviews and taking pictures that can be used throughout the year to create human interest stories. At least that was my experience.

Napier and staff have been more open about recruiting than any staff here-to-fore, so I give them a pass on anything they want to hold close to the vest.

If Napier tried to keep his staff a secret, I might feel differently.

The auditorium might be nice but the COX center lends itself to over the table interviews and is the easiest walk to Photos in The Swamp.

Where can I watch the conference? Trying to navigate the Ragin Cajun site is a joke Why do they have the meetings at the cox center? Didn't they build a nice auditorium in the APC for that purpose?

In fact, the press conferences from here on out will be in the Cox building at least for football.

There weren’t a ton of one-on-one interviews with players like there was in the past. I believe there were only 5 available and there weren’t any QB’s. We were hoping to get more human interest stories. I understand why they may have limited it to certain players it was just different which could be a good thing.

Reporter steering without writing the actual question has long been one of my media pet peeves.

I was in on many of the interviews so I heard questions and answers. Unfortunately when print comes to shove they often make it sound like the coach was trying to get something off his chest.
