    Default Softball Ranked 18/20

after a 3-2 week softball falls to 18 in the NFCA and 20 in the ncaa polls. Not bad. Looking forward to another weekend of tough competition.

Same here. All 5 teams were in the NCAA tournament last year.

Some REALLY tough competition. We'll likely be favored to win only one game.

Got to see them play a couple of games on Saturday vs. Texas and UTSA in Houston. Frankly, I am surprised we are still ranked, but glad that we are. Defense was pretty bad, hitting was irratic and pitching was suspect. Plus, the loss of Katie Smith for the year will not help. UL has some young players in key positions who will improve throughout the year. This weekend's tournament will be a better indicator as we will face much better competition. I'm betting this team will be OK in the long run.

Rankings dont go by how well you play. Its where they were last week and where their record is this year along with future expectations. We could be out hit in every game and as long as we're 8-2, we're not gonna drop out. Many teams had losing records and didnt drop out. We went 3-2.

    Also, rankings dont matter.

I totally agree... with one very small exception. The part about "rankings don't matter"? For a university as ours that has to fight for everything it gets, rankings surely do help in recruiting... when kids out there are looking at your program and are able to see that you are indeed a serious player with the bigger boys (or gals) out there!

Of course, I was being a little facetious with the last line. Really, they mainly matter at the end of the year, not the 2nd week of the season.

I remember back in 2008, the Cajuns had a pretty young team with plenty of new faces... didnt do very well in the beginning against tough competition but as the season progressed they learned and grew as players...

I'd say that season ended pretty well =)

Rankings go pretty much according to your name, your football conference, and the relationship of your coaching staff with people from other softball powers.

    Proof:

Arizona State Lost to unranked Kentucky and had 3 errors in the game. They also lost to unranked Illinois State after having 5 errors. Poor defense and 2 losses to pretty weak teams, yet they are still ranked #7. They have one victory over a ranked team and that was over #24 Texas A&M.

Washington lost to unranked Utah State after allowing a 5 run inning. They have no victories over ranked teams. They remain #1.

Michigan lost to unranked Virginia and is ranked #4.

Ohio State has four losses including unranked Kentucky, unranked Houston, and two to Alabama, yet remain ranked ahead of the Cajuns. Let’s compare the two teams. Both lost to Houston by one run. The Cajuns lost to Texas, and Ohio State lost to Alabama. Ohio State lost to Kentucky, but beat Louisville and Baylor (both ranked in the top 27).

Northwestern has losses to unranked Creighton, unranked Nevada, and three ranked teams. They are 5-5 with only one victory over a ranked team. They remain in the top 25.

At this point in the season people are only guessing about rankings, and most have no clue about how other teams lost. There should be no rankings until 20 games (or 5-6 weeks) into the season.

We should be very proud of our team, but we should also be happy that our coaching staff and team history is regarded with high respect throughout the country. Placed in a regional that is not “stacked” and a reasonable super regional bid gets the Cajuns into the CWS. I’m predicting a top 3 finish for this team. We have the best pitching in the country, reasonable hitting, and a defense that will be among the very best by seasons end.

Yes, rankings now matter because it is VERY hard to move up. Every team ranked above us in the NFCA poll is from a BCS conference. They tend to stand together in all sports. This team is going to pull off something that is almost impossible – make a run at a national title from a small conference.

    Geaux Cajuns! Why not us!?!

Rankings, SOS and RPI matter more then just rankings for the Cajuns. BCS conferences weren't as important in softball until recently because the amount of money currently being poured into the sport by major programs. Quality wins against ranked teams and schedule strength help our program, and the Cajuns do have a tradition. I think 11 straight years of making a regional and 3 college SWS appearances this decade.
