Ike Taylor asked to be moved to CB his senior year

Lots of players envision playing out of position, the coaching staff still needs to identify if your skill set fits.

Like jllanclos said, Ike had a long NFL career, but it never would have happened as a Baldwin running back.

So, there is no way Todd Lott's skill set was properly used last year. ... Even if he did say all the right things at the end.

Just give the guy a wood bat next spring. Maybe some chowder. He’ll be all SunBelt 1st team.

Its on him because he listened to our hitting coach to not keep his natural swing

He wasn’t playing out of position, he played both in high school. He asked to move.

Congrats to Todd. Good news is he should get a decent draft and plenty of time to prove he can't play in pro ball. Most need to prove they can play. A few, like Todd need to prove they can't play.

If he blamed someone else, then he would have transferred.

Hopefully, everybody moves forward with a fresh start. The coaches jobs are to put players in spots to be successful. This has been a big enough fail for the blame to be spread around.

Where do you read where anyone said "he" was playing out of position?

    Nowhere.

He would have never made it to the NFL as a running back.

Coaches had to reidentify Ike's best position. Sometimes they do sometimes they don't.

No where will I say it is solely up to the player, I know of some players who insist on playing QB, it doesn't mean the position exercises their best potential.

You said lots of players envision playing out of position, he wasn't. The coaches didn't reidentify his position, he did. You have no way of knowing how good he could have been at RB in Bustles offense which produced some great RB's. Majority of time position changes are out of necessity. The coaches have a need of depth at another position or a player sees more opportunity to play at another position. Ike also hadn't played football in 2 years when he finally got on the field so i would imagine there was some rust in that first year. Luckily for him it worked out.

You should have been able to discern that I'm using a greater body of examples to show desiring of a position is not enough. Nowhere did I say Ike Taylor was playing out of position, just not in his best position.

Do you think for one second Bustle came in and said assign these players whatever position they want? No.

Gary Bartel asked for Ivan Talor to switch to Cornerback. Gary Bartel deserves the credit for putting Ike Taylor in the position to succeed.

ps Bustle needed someone to backup Jerome Coleman. Ike was better suited elsewhere.

If Ike didn’t want to be a CB he wouldn’t have succeeded at it. Ike Taylor deserves the credit for his success. Just like Dion Ray, you can move him wherever you want but if he doesn’t want to be there he isn’t going to produce. It ultimately comes down to what the player wants. There are several discussions about position changes that you never hear about because the player doesn’t want. Football isn’t the type of game you can succeed being half hearted about your position. Bartel May have gone to bustle on behalf of Ike. Coaches get too much credit/blame on things like this IMO. Anyway, Todd Lott got plenty of playing time at the end of the season because he started producing. Hopefully he can carry the last 3 months of production into next spring.

Not to hijack the thread too much, but prior to Ike's senior season the starting cornerbacks were Charles Tillman (2nd round pick) and Brad Franklin (7th round pick by Panthers). When Franklin left, it opened up the spot for Ike. Coach Gary Bartel actually moved Ike to CB before Bustle ever came on board. (Coach Bartel was on both staffs)
