FACT: Javon went to Fatima. Kelley went to Fatima (left for disciplinary reasons). Enrollment is down at STM and nearly every Catholic school in the diocese... this is a result of the sorry state of our economy.

Javon went to Fatima, a feeder of STM. We both stayed in after school care at Fatima because our parents worked late. I can remember as far back as 5th grade he was there and he was 2 years behind me. My memory may be slightly off as far as grade, but I seriously doubt STM recruited him to Fatima at that early age to be at a feeder. Maybe his mother simply wanted her kid to get a better education and worked hard to facilitate that She probably utilized the grant program for lower income households at both schools. As did my parents

Same thing happened in the last oilfield great depression of the 80's. CHS-NI was down to like 400 students in grades 4-12. Mt. Carmel Academy, the 125 year old sister school to CHS closed down in 1988. These are two schools that made it through the 1930's and had LONG histories in the community, and one had to close in the 80's. Private school attendance will rebound when the oilfield fully rebounds. Southside or not.

The enrollment at LCA has exploded over the last 6-7 years. Lots of parents don't want their kids in the public schools and cant afford STM or Teurlings in the current economic climate. LCA is the least expensive private school in the area.

That being said, with the higher demand, and limited classroom space (currently), LCA tuition has been on a pretty steady rise so it probably wont be too long before the tuition gap is significantly small.

It doesn't matter today, but his residence was on the Northside of Lafayette. How is parents paid for it doesn't matter now as well.

I don’t blame a parent or a kid one bit if they can find a way to better their kids situation regardless if it’s through the classroom or athletic field. I don’t think any of you would turn down assistance if you couldn’t afford it but thought it gave your child a better chance to succeed. There are a lot of parents who receive help at private schools just because they need it, don’t see why a family/kid should be penalized because they are good at sports.

I don't really have a problem with the kid or family making that decision if its offered to them. It occurs everywhere that costs money to attend. My problem is just that certain schools have taken advantage of it and essentially played it like a collegiate recruiting platform. LCA comes to mind in recent years, particularly in basketball. Their competitive advantage is far too great for the district they play in and teams they play in state competition. High Schools are not meant to be run like collegiate athletic programs but some are and that's who gives the others a bad name.

It happens in public school just as often if not more because it’s easier to do and doesn’t stick out. Plenty of public school kids go to different schools by simply putting down a different address of who they live with. That’s what athletics has become. You habe big time colleges offering 8th graders. To me it’s worse for public school because it’s just for athletics, the kid generally isn’t gaining much of an educational advantage if any at all. Probably going backwards majority of the time just by simply changing schools. Everybody does it and they do it because of the pressure to win from the boosters, parents and fans. Win or get fired.
