I could use some enlightenment on why a player would sign for less than their slot money. Is it as simple as we won't draft you at this spot if you don't take less money so we can give it to another player later in the draft? If that's the case, what is the point of "slot money"? I assumed slot money is set to protect the player, so they would get at least what is determined their worth at that pick. Seems like it's the opposite.

A lot of times GMs will draft a guy higher than their projection in order to sign them for less slot money and use that on later picks.

The Astros did that with correa and Bergman.
