Obviously that will not happen as Dr. Maggard (nor any AD) will not grant an extension which involves a salary decrease. Every one has an opinion and that opinion has value. However Dr. Maggard's opinion trumps all others by a wide margin in this case and this is his call.

Mike, don’t you think people know this? Also do you really believe that fan sentiment plays zero in the administration decisions? Fan sentiment is like parsley in a gumbo. First the roux, then the trinity, protein, salt, and spices which parsley is just one minor element

Yes fan sentiment is a consideration. Sentiment of the majority of people going to basketball games is support for the staff. That opinion may differ from some who post here but those numbers are not nearly enough to influence Dr. Maggard at this stage.

Maggard holds all the cards where is Marlin going to go ?

We need to reduce his base but make his top end higer but heavily incentivise

    Base salary $350K

Beat a top 50 team 5k for every one

Beat a top 25 10k for every one

    Win 20 games 10 k

Win the belt regular seaon 25 k

    Win the belt tourney 25k

Win a ncaa tournament game 10k

    Make it to sweet 16 15 k

    Elite 8. 25 k

    Final 4 40k

    Win a NC 60 K

Interesting concept there and some good suggestions. However we all know that much of a drastic decrease in base salary won't even be considered. In fact it won't even cross the minds of the decision makers.

There is no doubt that we have the resources to do this compared to our conference peers. With Marlin's contract extension, I'm curious to see if it pays dividends in the next few years with a tournament appearance.

It wasn't that long ago (in fact, it wasn't long after our NCAA tournament appearances) that some on this board made it clear regular season accomplishments were critical. Louisiana Tech, a school that hasn't made an NCAA appearance in 27 years, was actually held up as an example by those folks because they had some very good regular seasons.

After winning a conference championship this past season and scoring 27 wins, some of those same people wanted Marlin fired because we dared to lose a game in the conference tournament. They now use the "one NCAA appearance in eight years" as their reasoning.

Bob Marlin is the head coach. He's going to get a contract extension. That is due, in part, to finishing toward the top of the league in four of the last five seasons. It is also due, in part, to reaching the conference tournament semifinals in three of the last five years. It is also due, in part, to continued success in the classroom.

When Coach Marlin made his "it all comes down to three days in March" comment, people on this board vilified him and talked about regular season success. And, to reiterate, some of those same people pooh poohed 27 wins because there was a blip during three days in March.

Those particular people will always find things to complain about as long as Bob Marlin is coaching here.

I would say that I'm okay with Dr. Maggard negotiating a contract extension for Coach Marlin, that is more incentive based, lowers the buyout, gives more clarity on the loosely defined language " finishing toward the top of the league" and allows him to go out and recruit without concern of the discussion of commitment to his program. All changes were necessary because of the contract language agreed upon by his predecessor.
