I think in basketball & football contracts can be important from a recruiting standpoint as well. If there is even a hint that a coach might not be around for the long haul others are going to use it against you. I don't think it is as relevant in other sports.
I can see both sides but an extension at this stage shouldn't be a huge shock to anyone.

27-7 with a SOS of 206 & 0 wins against top 100 teams is nothing to be proud of
Question, what if Dr. Maggard extends his contract for several more years with a slight increase in salary, but gets a lower buyout in return? Would that not be beneficial to the athletic program? I'm willing to wait for the details at this point, I don't see Dr. Maggard not doing something that would benefit both parties.JMO
Pretty sure he makes more than that now. He signed a new contract in 2015 with a base salary of $180K but compensation of $455K in the first year with an annual raise of $25K for each year of the five year agreement which would run through the 2019-2020 season. If I'm adding correctly, after the third year (last) he would have been making $530K. That would mean next year would be $555K and the final year would be $580K.
He's currently got a two year window.
This was his best team by far. The only other season of note, finishing 3rd and tournament champs with two dramatic heroic come backs. Other than that a very pedestrian career at Louisiana.
What’s the hurry? Nobody is gonna steal him away. Believe me he’s had his hat in the ring for a bigger gig since year one.
That may be what is negotiated. A lower buyout would protect the university and a salary increase would benefit the staff. That would seem to be a win for all involved. He had two years remaining so they could have waited one more year. You never let your coach go recruit with only one year on his deal so it would have likely happened at this time next year. I understand some would have preferred to wait in the event next season is a big disappointment. Not sure why they are doing this now other than some private understanding it would happen with either a regular season or conference tournament championship. I know some here may question this decision but the only opinion that counts here is Dr. Maggard's. As has been stated here in the past, he thinks very highly of Coach Marlin. Also, the vast majority of the people who go to the games regularly do not post here and they support the staff.
