For AAA, the monthly salary is $2150 per month and it goes up to $2400 the second year and $2700 the third year.
A player must be placed on the team’s 40-man roster or be subject to the Rule 5 Draft at the end of his fourth season (if signed at age 19 or higher) or fifth season (if signed at age 18 or lower).
Baseball is considered a "hobby" by federal guidelines... although there is a class action law suite out there,, no one expects it to go anywhere.
Players only get paid during the season-- not even during spring training. So they are looking at getting paid about 4 months of the year. They typically pay room and board- around $300 a month - in the lower leagues the team may own a hotel or apartments.. otherwise they stay with a host family. They have to pay for their own meals. Its not hard to do the math and see that there is very little left during the month- but also little time to spend it anyway.
