Baseball Coach or Life Coach

Life lessons or not, this is my personal belief from a baseball fan perspective only.

My biggest issue with Tony has been the lack of consistency. It seems that after we have a very successful season, we tend to take a step or two backwards, see the 2001 season as well as the 2011 and 2012 seasons and the last 3 years. This program had success before Tony. We are in a talent rich state. We have one of the best fan bases in America (see attendance number over the last decade or so). We have a palace to play in. I understand that we don't attract SEC type caliber players every year, but we should be able to attract talent just below that level, and then develop the talent. There is absolutely zero excuse for UL not to be in post season 4 out of every 5 years, period.

Wasn't 2001 the year we lost about 9 productive players from 2000 including a number of juniors. I think the drop-offs have typically been when we lose the expected seniors but also a number of draft eligible juniors. It's especially painful with pitchers and you can't usually expect freshmen pitchers to come in and be weekend starters right away unless you find lightning in a bottle (Gunner Leger/Evan Guillory/Wyatt Marks/Dylan Moore).

Why should cajunrage have the list ready? That's Maggard's job. And as we've seen with Napier and Glasco, he can go out and find coaches.

You know what...you're absolutely right...therefore...it's not cajunrage’s job to determine when the fire starts getting hot...Maggard has proven himself to all of us and we should trust the process and his leadership when it comes to our athletic programs...end of discussion...

You are correct, but we had come off of a super regional in 1999 and then the CWS in 2000. We should have planned accordingly with regard to recruiting prior to and through the 1999 season so that we wouldn't have the situation that arose in 2001 where we didn't even make the conference tournament.

First, Robe is both a baseball coach and a life coach. And he always has been. It didn't stop him from fielding the #1 ranked team in the country in 14. And it's not the reason behind the struggles of late. That's just silly.

That doesn't mean that he shouldn't be held accountable for his program's performance, or that of his assistant coaches. He should, and I believe Maggard will. Just that head coach and life coach are not mutually exclusive concepts. And the world would be much better off if more coaches took that aspect of their jobs more seriously. It is, in both the kid's and our long term interest.

That doesn't mean that he shouldn't be held accountable for his program's performance, or that of his assistant coaches. He should, and I believe Maggard will. I would tend to agree with this sentiment.

Continuing with my “it’s the players stupid” stance.....just wondering who we lost by players not getting offered here, choosing a better school (sec), getting more offered by another, getting drafted, getting out recruited, injuries? The what if and how close to what could have been......anybody got names or stories???

Being a baseball coach should include being a life coach. Being a life coach does not necessarily include being a baseball coach. Tony is paid to be a baseball coach. Don't let 90 and jeaux muddy the conversation. I'm not saying recruit thugs. I'm not saying throw life lessons out the door. I'm saying fix the glaring issue that resulted in bad baseball the last 2 years and have expectations. It was stated earlier, status quo is never acceptable. If you aren't improving, you are regressing because other good programs are either passing you up or leaving you completely behind.
