Can’t say I’m “happy “ with the hire. I’m certainly thrilled that a change has been made, but I was hoping for a known commodity. This guy has very little track record, so I guess we will see. Definitely wish him the best, and I’ll be at The Tigue to support him and the team, but I was surely looking for a bigger name with proven success.

Yeah, everyone wants a splash and gets disappointed (and cynical) when it doesn't happen.

This guy is gonna be good.

Hope so. I’m pulling for him.

As disappointing as this season was, our RPI was higher than Miami, Arizona State, Alabama, Tennessee and literally a couple dozen P5 programs.

Robe conjured every trick in the book with game time smoke and mirrors to end up a decent record.

We will be lucky if we keep him 3 full years.
How does this hire send shock waves (as you stated a couple of weeks ago) through the G5 world of baseball programs?

I am not very up to date on Coach Wells’ resume so I appreciate your input to explain why this hire should have all G5 programs attention.

Does this hire turn heads of most other G5 baseball programs and make them realize Cajuns are serious? If so, why?

I’ll ignore your underlying smartassness and history of MAT hate for a moment, and answer the questions. After all, I am turning over a new leaf..

When I made that comment, we were hot on the trail of another, more well known Jake. We were also in talks with a sitting head coach and a former SEC head coach. In the weeks following, madness ensued, and 2/3 coaches were offered really good gigs with powerhouse programs. The third, I was told, wasn’t exactly what Robe was looking for, in the end.

Jake Wells helped Campbell to its 2nd (I think, or maybe 3rd) ever regional. He was instrumental in getting LaNech back to baseball postseason for the first time in 27 years. (They posted team BA of .288 and .302 if IIRC, and really were a scary team offensively while Goff was there.) Goff took one man to Alabama with him when he was hired by the Tide. That man was Jake Wells. He’s young, intense, likable, and players seem to play hard for him.

From everything I’ve read and learned, Jake built those Tech offenses. He recruited those players and engineerned one hell of a lineup, basically from scratch.

If I may add, everything in his history points to this:

The kids are going to LOVE playing for him. That, in itself, will be a big step forward. When it comes to assistants, the term "player's coach" is a very big compliment.

I don't think we're going to go from a .242 average (or whatever it was) to .285 overnight. But I believe the Cajuns got better with this hire.

As a fan and season ticket holder I'm excited and happy.

I've seen a downturn the last few years and I've heard excuses.

Now I see a change and hope we respond as a team.
