I do not believe you understand if you really believe that bunting drills hurt batting average. Bunting is part of batting practice at every level of the game. It is rare our incoming players have to be taught how to hunt as opposed to put through regular drills meant to keep the skill sharp, or to sharpen it for players that will be expected to bunt more or who are very bad at it.
Bunting can help batting average in more than one way. The obvious is being able to bunt for a base hit. Bunting drills help hand eye coordination and get timing down better. When bunting you are still seeing a pitch giving your eyes more training (the more pitches you see the better). It helps you continue developing your understanding of the strike zone. It helps you become a more selective and better hitter.
Of course you don't spend the majority of offensive drills on bunting. I don't think Robe coached teams do either.

-Jake from State Farm turns Monica into borderline All America
-Todd Lott hits .300+ HR 15+ 60+ RBI
-Cajuns back in postseason
