I appreciate your efforts into making this name thing become a reality.
With that being said, our own university has sometimes unintentionally shafted us with our acronym (remember UL-L a few years back?). The marketing department will have to find a way to consolidate ideas and stick with an abbreviation. Plus, our backwards state legislature decided to put in that "LSU Rule" that no school can officially use the abbreviation "UL" on any type of documentation. Again.......backwards state. So in that regard, it will take a little longer for the rest of the state to recognize us by that abbreviation and the name itself.
This is definitely a process. As long as we promote the brand and continue the success, the name will catch on with everyone.
An interesting aspect of the in-state buffoonery that we are faced with on this issue took place at the UL-LTUR game a few weeks ago: was reading on the mutt board that they were incensed ..... INCENSED, I tell ya ..... that their sorry ___z AD had 'caved in' to us in our name game, because the scoreboard went by the Ragin Cajuns vs the Bulldogs, instead of ULL & LTU, which they said has never been done before for any game/school. They also said the PA was diligent in referring to us solely as the "Cajuns" rather than ULL/etc., and that it was very obvious that they were doing so due to our request.
That may not seem much, but if you think about it, it is one of the first times that we have made any progress at all with an in-state school. The dam has sprung a leak, and it is just a matter of time now when the flood will start.
someone should e mail Maggard now and ask him to contact the NCAA about the scoreboard and maybe get ahead of this thing.
Last night on WWL TV in NOLA Tulane lost a close game to Louisiana Lafayette.
I’m pretty sure that the NCAA isn’t going to tell LSU how to refer to the various schools. It’s going to be ULL on the scoreboard. Y’all didn’t see LA or Louisiana on the basketball scoreboard in the NIT did you?
??? Now the NCAA definitely has some stroke but really?? You expect them to go to bat for us and try to fight what LSU perceives as an issue of law in the state of Louisiana. All LSU has to do is point to "the LSU rule" and that is that. This is a fight not even worth fighting. All it will do is make things harder on us in the long run.
We've won the battle on numerous fronts but this one is akin to Boudreaux using his crop duster against a Russian Mig. As others have stated the only name I'm concerned with is winner.
Don't mean to hijack this thread, so feel free to move this to another if appropriate. But since we are talking about this, an option, not necessarily suggesting this, would be to do what many of the old Big 8 schools did that would certainly circumvent the law just as use of Louisiana does. Just trying to help figure out a way to dig out of this hole we were thrown into, although it might be a hard transition from UL to LU. Still, better than ULL and I don't think LA will ever catch on as a reference we would use like UL or LU. Image LU on a FDL as our logo in comparison to the other 3 below.
OU - University of Oklahoma
KU - University of Kansas
CU - University of Colorado
LU - University of Louisiana
Don’t like it (LU) at all. Also think LU is also not kosher. Louisiana is our best option as the law currently exists.
