Folks, In December, we were not even sure that we could field a team, much less one that could compete, albeit, at the highest levels.

These lady's and their new coaching staff have done a wonderful job this year, Top 25, Top 25 RPI, 1/2 game out of conference championship, lost in finals of conference tournament after beating TST in the second round and now a 2 cede in a regional in which we match up about the best we can. While the team may have lost games they probably should not have lost, all in all, considering the state of circumstances they were faced with from the beginning, they have done pretty damn good.

Hopefully this weekend we continue to pitch well, get a couple of baseball breaks and prevail again like they have done all year.

Then, the same people can continue to be Shocked, Surprised, Not Confident, etc. . . . but they should no longer be in apposition criticize . . .
There was never a moment anyone thought we might have a problem fielding a team, even a competitive team.

There was definitely a period of time that it looked like a full mutiny could take place. Had that happened... we would have been toast this season. We owe the women that chose to hang in there and work their way through a tough emotional roller coaster. We owe Dr. Maggard, T-Joe and their people the effort they gave in rapidly bringing in a top head softball coach and staff.

Trust me, the day that the coach got fired and the news media showed a bunch of young ladies leaving Lamson Park with their belongings in trash bags after having been locked out of their earned surroundings, that was a moment that many had concern over whether we would be in a position to field a team this year.

We do absolutely owe all of them our loyalty and gratitude. I just never felt or believed we were in danger of not fielding a team, nor a competitive team. Absolutely possible we weren’t going to be competitive at a high level.

Winning a regional would be impressive with the hitting limitations the squad deals with. However, from a national perspective NIT basketball (even when dwarfed by the NCAA) will always gets more attention than any softball game. Simply a factor of of the northern portion of the country not paying attention to a female diamond sport. I understand that may not be the view of some of our softball supporters due to the passion with which they support their favorite program. My point is not to disrespect those positions or the accomplishments of the female athletes which represent us with class. It is simply to point out how things are viewed nationally.

Remember the whole “they locked us out of the stadium” story? While the whole Lotief story had to be covered, the news and social media helped sensationalize it and draw division between the fans. Those players that stayed had to show some mental toughness to stick together. Those that did, anyway. They are to be commended.

If they want to still call us ULL or Louisiana Lafayette, or UL Lafayette, we call them State instead of LSU to get them riled up.
