I expect tonight to be another low scoring affair on both sides of the ball.

Some food for thought....

If you were to reverse all the games that we won or lost by three runs or less we would be either 36-7 or 5-38 on the year.

Apply the same logic to one run games and we would be either 29-14 or 15-28. That is the thing that gives me hope for this team. Even when we have lost we've rarely been out of it until the last inning and it seems we are starting to figure out how to stay on the right side of the runs.

Don't have time to run the numbers but another interesting stat. Let me first say that the amount of analysis done on this is very limited for college baseball but it obviously isn't surprising that OBP correlates closely with runs scored.

I did a little research and did some comparisons. IF our OBP were 80 points higher which would put us in the top 50 we would probably be looking at 8-10 more wins on the season. I'm sure some are going duh....no kidding I'm sure a lot of teams would. However I don't think that would hold true for a lot of teams. I took a quick look at a few SEC teams it would not have helped them like it helps us.

I guess my point is this. We are playing very good baseball in regards to pitching and defense and no team is likely to get dramatically better in these areas at this point in the season but teams definitely can get better at the plate at any point in the season. So our weakness right now is the one aspect of the game that can rapidly change. If we can keep improving at the plate and get just a few more hits and free bases this team can do some damage moving forward.
