This is what bothers me about this conversation.
We don't need another Deggs. Of course it would be awesome to find a guy like that again, but it isn't necessary to win at a high level. With Tony's pitching system and reputation for building quality pitchers, if we could just get AVERAGE production offensively, we'd be lethal every season.
As far as the anomaly convo, I think the 2014 season was a perfect storm. Deggs' attitude and style, matched with guys who hated to lose, local kids that loved this baseball program, and a schedule that lined up perfectly. Also, we stayed healthy all year.
We have yet to make a hire with Russo Park in the background and an administration that is committed to our athletic program. I don’t think anyone knows what type of assistant coach we are capable of getting. And honestly, outside of the top schools in the power conferences, being an assistant here is probably a better job IMO.
Bingo. If the administration is committed to putting the money where it needs to go, I have no doubt that we could find a hitting coach that would jump at the opportunity to come here. The stadium and fanbase recruits itself. All we would have to do is for the recruit to show up to a game, and he would be sold.
I have a feeling Robe will get rid of Talbot if he thinks the program as a whole will be better without him (results, ticket sales, donations, etc). I agree with others who posted above that it’s unlikely that Maggard will micromanage the termination of an assistant coach. I have full faith in Robe to do what’s best for this program, as he’s done for a very long time.
Lots of empty seats last Friday night.
Even if the season ticket sales stay the same, less fannies in the seats is not good for concessions, or the "vibe" the recruits show up for. If this anemic offense trend continues the inevitable slow downward spiral begins.
If the program goes from fighting to host regionals to fighting for a conference tourney spot, it won't be pretty.
Despite the recent wins we are still 295th in OB%. We are winning with smoke and mirrors.

We have a very good recruiting class coming in next year and our pitching staff will be stacked. Just saying.
What’s aggravating is that this is why the stadium was built in the first place. It was built to elevate the program based off off the previous success. We were going to Omaha, hosting regionals and super regionals in a high school stadium. Now that we have the palace, common sense tells us that it should be a little easier. Especially with growing support financially.
Ain't that the truth. No Pain Train. Weakest offense in the conference....In a lot of conferences. We had to throw two shutouts to finally win a home series.
Tony is coaching his butt off around our collective deficiencies, whether they be talent, youth, 3B coaching, Non-stop stop signs, whatever. Without him we would be 10 games under .500.
