Actually, the Cox TV broadcast had loads of problems in their interview of Coach Robe during the game. The audio kept cutting out throughout the interview.

First thing I would check is the frequency of the microphone. Microphones operating in the 700 Mhz band have been prohibited by the FCC since 2010, as those frequencies are now being used for emergency services such as police and firefighters.

If the microphone is not a true diversity model, it should be. These have two separate receivers and circuitry that always picks the strongest signal. This avoids drop-outs when the signal bounces off of objects and cancels itself out. The antennas are a few inches apart so it is unlikely to experience a drop out on both receivers at the same time.

Assuming the receiver is in the press box, that is a fairly long range for a wireless microphone. Cheap ones may not reach that far. UHF models typically have better range the VHF. A model with selectable frequencies will allow you to change the channel if interference is detected.

Finally, use fresh alkaline batteries EVERY time, no exceptions.

And it works during football season so wireless/wired is not an issue honestly. It has happened at more away games than home games at least from what I've noticed.

Bring 10 rolls of aluminum foil with you to away games. along with a collapsible cardboard box that the interviewer and interviewee can climb inside of once it's assembled. You, or another concerned party, rapidly cover the box in foil before going on air. Or. use a microphone that has a very good shielded cable. Whichever you choose.
