Thread: Marlin's Record

  1. #1

    UL Basketball Marlin's Record

Here is Marlin's D1 record at UL, broken down in several ways.

    Conference Regular Season standings: 1, T2, 3, 4, 4, 4, 6, 8

    Conference Tournament titles: 1

    NCAA Appearances (record): 1 (0-1)

    NIT Appearances (record): 1 (0-1)

    Road Record: 48-71

    Neutral Record: 13-11

    Home Record: 77-25

    Overall Record: 138-107

    Record vs RPI 1-100: 10-32

    Record vs RPI 101-200: 44-54

    Record vs RPI 1-200: 54-86

    Record vs RPI 201-351: 84-21

Not a bad overall record if you don't care about championships or building a quality program. In the best Scott Farmer tradition, it is "comfortable".

I am with you VOB, there needs to be improvement. None of us are satisified with how we have performed against teams with a pulse. I think its useless since marlin is obviously not going anywhere after this season.

What i would like to see, since marlin is obviously not going anywhere, is them bring in another assistant. There has to be a change somewhere, maybe bring in someone who will help challenge bobs thinking

Sorry, this is dumb. Marlin inherited the worst basketball program we've had since 1960 - a program that lost to a friggin D2 school. It is ridiculous to expect Marlin to have huge success out the gate. These stats reflect the years where he was rebuilding. It doesn’t tell us anything about what he has done to improve the program.

What matters is where we are now and where we are going in the future. We are arguably the best team in the state over the last few years, 2018 Conference Champions, finished with a 69 RPI, and we are landing recruits that will carry on this success.

Bustle inherited the worse college football team in America in 2002. He proceeded to win (tie) 1 conference title. He wasn't expected to have huge success out of the gate.

Still better than LSU's road record this year 30% NIT was wise to gift them a home game where LSU was 71%

Marlin's second best finish was in year 1, when he tied for 2nd in the conference; the 6th place tie was last year. Let's try to stay at least a little bit factual, and not pretend that there has been a steady rise.

Marlin's road record against teams comparable to those LSU played on the road this year is 2-22.

No actually Jim Hatfield did when he took over a program with no team and had to recruit to nothing. Bob Marlin took over a program rocked by probation and with APR concerns. But he inherited some talent to build around.

He has done an outstanding job of finally recruiting athletes with good character, graduating them and repairing the image of the Ragin Cajun brand. What he has not done well, is compete with programs that are Top 150 on a consistent basis including a few inside the SBC the last 5 seasons.

In the last 3 years Marlin is 2-11 against the top 100 RPI, 20-17 vs 101-200 RPI, so 22-27 vs top 200 RPI.

His first 3 years he was 3-10 vs top 100, 13-28 vs 101-200, so 16-38 vs top 200. Some improvement there, but nothing remarkable, and he plays fewer top 200 teams now than then.

Ironic that the worst football team in America 2001 had two future NFL players (both Juniors) and a future CFL Hall of Famer on the roster.

In 2002 Bustle's cupboard was extremely slim pickings no depth (like Napier's now) but not bare. In 4 years he turned it around and then plateaued.

I like this information. Anyway you can compare it to our peers? Georgia State, MTSU, etc.

Only 13 top 100 RPI opportunities in 101 games.

How do we fix the number of opportunities so that the stat becomes meaningful?

No team will fair well against top notch competition if they only get 4 opportunities a year almost exclusively on the road.

What is our RPI for every year since Marlin took over? What does that trend tell you?

It has been up and down. No real trend to see. The two best were this year and year 5. I will post them in a bit.

I agree. And when we fired him it wasn’t because of his overall record. It was because he was clearly spinning his wheels.

Marlin is clearly NOT spinning his wheels.
