Thread: Marlin's Record

I like to look at coaches like employers look at employees. Let’s say you have a 5 point rating system 1 being the lowest 5 being the highest. A 3 means you are doing a good job and performing at a satisfactory level. I think Marlin would get a 3 or a 4 in most people’s minds. I have been firmly in the 3 camp, but this year it may have been a 4. With the exception of the softball coach I think most of our coaches are 2 or 3’s (Hud was a 2, Napier has no rating). Even Robe is a 3 if you look at the last year and a half. Most of the time in organizations 3’s do not get fired.
For Marlin this year needs to become the baseline moving forward. I think he can become a 4.

For the first time in 8 years, we were the best team in our league.
Its hard to overlook that BR-A&M wanted several other coaches before they had to settle for the Cajun Cookie Monster. Now he may turn out to be the Saban killer they long for but he wasnt anywhere near their first choice.

100% agree but some will interpret "know our limitations" as "settle".
Many of our limitations are external and damned near impossible to overcome. No change in coaches, ADs whatever will change that.

CajunT, we are in 100% agreement on what the expectations are for Marlin going forward. I also think fans have a stake in the direction. That is why the AD job is so important. You need a strong AD that can push back against the worst instincts of fans. I think we are set up nicely in that regard.

I understand this comparison to industry. However most coaches are like CEO’s. Stockholders can demand change there and fans can indicate their displeasure with coaches. That is what happened with Hud. As far as basketball is concerned the amount
That want change now is insignificant. A year similar to this one next season won’t change that.

Basketball is on solid ground at the moment and is one of the best programs we have at this University.
Now MuellerCajun is telling us we can’t find a competent coach to come to little Ole Lafayette.

Dude, why are you here? You clearly belong on the purple and puke board.

A&M fanbase (Metry’s people) is delusional in thinking their job is top 10 in the country. Simply isn’t.

They settled because they had to.

Not quite what he said. He indicated firing a coach after winning a regular season title would cause many qualified to not have interest. Location has nothing to do with it.

Looks like reading comprehension is not your strong suit either. Neither one of us want the coach fired. Both of us think the record against top 150 teams is unacceptable. Both of us support change if we regress. Both of us think Marlin has accumulated a strong squad. It ok to agree with me sometimes. I don’t bite.

Guilty. I did skim your comment, mostly because I just assume it’s all bs. At any rate, fans should be aware of our limitations, and project accordingly. However, there should be standards around here. And I’m not on the fire Marlin train. I’m just saying, don’t tout 150+ RPI wins as “46 wins is the most in a 2 year stretch in the history of this school”. While on the surface, yes, technically that is correct. But I can almost guarantee you our previous schedules did not have 20/30 opponents being in the 150+ RPI bracket.

We need to establish what is acceptable and what is being successful for this program, year in and out, and in certain spans.
