Improving our strength of schedule is a challenge which will likely take more money. Implementing a multi faceted strategy for the program to take next level type of steps is crucial. We have a first class arena to watch games but that's not enough. I haven't been a MBB season ticket holder usually making the last five or six home games after duck season. But will be purchasing them for next season.
The real question is are we really committed to having a very good to great basketball program, or are we comfortable with mediocrity?

If we continue to accept the current level of success against top 100 and top 200 teams, and if we do not improve scheduling by dropping bad teams and replacing them with at least top 200 opponents, you will have your answer.

Also worth noting that in Coach Davis's first 8 seasons at MT, which were all in the Sunbelt. He was 137-110, with no post season appearances and no 20-win seasons.

He obviously then turned it around.

    Conference Tournament Titles: 2

    NCAA Appearances (Record): 3 (2-3)

    NIT Appearances (Record): 2 (3-1)

    Record vs RPI 1-100: 22-36

    Record vs RPI 101-200: 72-26

    Record vs RPI 201-351: 84-13

This is what good coaches in weaker conferences do to be considered for good seeding or at large bids. Pay particular attention to the record vs 101-200 RPI, and the Road Record.
Clearly both Dr. Maggard and Coach Marlin have some work to do! It should never be personal about either men, but this is something that UL must continue to improve upon. The last 5 years have shown we are headed in the right direction. But, the days of CIT play are over!

I brought that up in a different thread. I don't think our fan base would have had that kind of patience.

Nice thread. Dad and mom tried to teach us something. Dad (VO) laid out the facts. Mom (Rebel) got defensive that the facts made little Billy look mediocre. Mom doesn't like the implication... and has to remind dad that little Billy started off with a handicap and has shown improvement. Dad points out that a canker sore doesn't excuse little Billy from making better grades. Mom insists the grades are improving. Mom, "He had Fs! He improved to a C-!" Dad, "He then got hung with a D-! I want a B every now and then!" Mom, "(Sniffling) But Billy didn't start out on good breast milk... the world isn't fair... he wants to do better... you're insensitive to me and little Billy! (Sobbing)". Dad, "Let's just stick with the facts, mom... and go fix me a sandwich."

    Marlin is 138-107...

I know it wasn't you who said we wouldn't have the patience to put up with 8 years like Davis' first 8... it seems we actually do.

I count his record as 155-111.

Marlin has post season trips and 20+ win seasons. Davis had none in those first 8.

Marlin has 2 post season trips, the CIT's were buy in tournaments. But you are correct, Davis had none.

My only point is that there is precedent for a coach improving greatly as his tenure continues. Not saying that it's a guarantee here. Just making the observation.

I think you can make that case off the last 5 seasons. Still much work to be done.
