The fallout would be the same. Who would want a job where the previous coach won two SBC Championships but failed to get into the big dance? A national search would be difficult and only coaches desperate for a head coaching job would be interested. It is stupid we are even talking about this. Basketball is on solid ground at the moment and is one of the best programs we have at this University.

And how many of the fans here on Ragin Pagin (no doubt the most rabid and connected of the fan base) are calling for him to be fired? Are there any? 1? 2? Translated to the entire fan base? <1%? All I see is mostly a group of very well informed basketball fans saying we need more. That there is more to it than just a gaudy record against terrible competition coupled with almost NEVER winning the big game or a game against mid to top flite competition. And they are right. And asked in private I BET Marlin would agree.

Instead judge the program by the trajectory it is on. In other words winning more against the same competition.

Ps Tragicomical: "series of incidents, of mixed tragic and comic character." In UL's case injury and sickness at playoff time. Don't use that as the benchmark of not succeeding.

Fan base shows their support ln donations and attendance when both those get down to a certain level it forces the admin to make a move .. Hud won more football games than any previous coach and was let go beacuse us fans spoke up

I think you are right in that the no. of people who would demand a coaching change if next year were similar to this one would be very small. Not enough to impact anything and Dr. Maggard would certainly not be in that number. I also agree that Coach Marlin's thinks a higher level of success in needed. Still, I don't discount what the opinion of anyone is. If someone wants to place there time and money elsewhere, that is OK with me as I certainly don't have the right to advocate they do otherwise. I would only caution them to think that just because they feel that way does not mean anywhere near the majority of others do.

LSU hired a borderline retard (trigger warning) would be like us hiring Matthew Graves because A big booster owed him a favor

Football had three straight losing seasons and off the field issues. Basketball has had five straight winning seasons and no off the court issues. Completely different situation. You are right that if fans stop supporting the product, a change will be made. I don't think we are anywhere near having that concern at this stage. Note the staff was just honored by other coaches with a prestigious award. His peers think he is doing well.

I agree. I think expectations should be high, but reasonable. And for 99% of the posters here I think they are. We know what our limitations are, but we should want and expect to overcome them and excel anyway. That's what winners do.

Its not many fans right now because most people know it is counterproductive to demand a coaching change while he wins multiple coaching awards. If he does the exact same thing next year my bet is even more will want his head on a platter. I agree with the criticism I just don’t agree with firing guys who compete for conference championships and post season play. If I see regression then I will change my tune.

He who figures out how to herd even a couple of cats will be the one to excel and move to the next level.

While it has been proven to be a most difficult task, we can still hope.

Hope is an optimistic state of mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes with respect to events and circumstances in one's life or the world at large. As a verb, its definitions include: "expect with confidence" and "to cherish a desire with anticipation". Among its opposites are dejection, hopelessness and despair

News flash, college athletic programs are funded by fans and students. Big money fans (supporters) sit on the RCAF Board. I understand athletic directors are hired to run athletic programs and must make the best decisions based upon their experience and knowledge of NCAA rules and bylaws. They must also manage the departments, fiscal budgets and personnel within the structure of the athletic department. And while the University President has the last word on a termination, aided by consultation from the Athletic Director, the supporters do have some input on these final decisions from a financial standpoint (RCAF and Season Ticket Holders).

While I can agree that no successful organization can make final decisions solely upon the suggestions of stake holders, some input is reasonable with the considerations of negative financial impact. But it ____es me off every time I hear a fan, or the media's self righteous indignation on firing coaches. Just who the heck do they think finances college athletics? The fans and students.

In specifically discussing Coach Marlin, I don't believe he would be terminated if he won several more conference championships, but did not make the NCAA Tournament over the next few years. That's simply not done at this level and would probably send any potential new coach a negative massage about this program. Now if he does not win another outright SBC Championship in the next few years and there is no post season play, then that would mean he would have one NIT, one NCAA and one SBC Championship in the last seven seasons. I don't think the fan support would be there at that point outside the 1,500 or so diehards and yes termination should be considered.
