This season wasn't about fighting to keep the loyal fan. It was about gaining a whole new wave of basketball fans. Last night didn't help to say the least. I don't quite understand what made you pull the anti fan trigger so fast. People pointing out that the team ____ the bed last night is legit. Do you understand that in this conference you can go undefeated in conference and still have tenuous at best respect? But you are disrespected when you lose to a cellar dweller... at home... just before the tournament... in front of your largest home crowd. That's all anyone was pointing out.
Last night squandered an opportunity to win over some new basketball fans. To say, "F them"... is beyond the dumbest thing our athletic program needs.
I hope so too. They played tough defensively. I just didn't understand how we got out of the smart and "no showboat" offense. We drove the lane ugly and out of control. And we tried too many no look or low quality passes in an effort to show off. It was almost like Marlin told them to just to have fun and shoot at will. If so... you would think that wouldn't happen in the tournament.
No one is going to disrespect this team other than Lafayette fans, true Cajun fan were already going to the games. I don't think anyone who watched this magical season will jump ship. Who cares that we lost one game next week has always been win or go to the NIT no questions ask. I'm so sick of the casual bandwagon fan. If you are a fan be a fan. I understand the disappointment because I am too but to jump ship or say I wont support these young men because we lost is just crazy. Three wins next week and no one remembers last night.
For some weird reason, losing the highest attendance game of the year seems to be a pseudo tradition.
Every University has casual "sidewalk" alums or as you put it, bandwagon fans. They are needed. Last night our guys walked out to the middle of the court and crapped out a real stinker on the floor. There's no getting around that. They and their Coaches deserved to lose the game. Now they have a chance to clean up their mess next weekend. This week at practice they need to be reminded of what level of effort got them to where they are now....
Winning three next week goes a long way in forgetting last night, but you can't discount the damage done by losing almost 30 points in RPI and whatever the loss in BPI was. That one game could be the difference between a possible 12 seed and a 14 seed.
Now, if we somehow get to the 2nd round or the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tourney with our lower seed, THEN nobody remembers last night. That would be akin to the 2000 baseball team getting swept at home before going on a tear all the way to the CWS.
Too many showboating plays lost us points. Easily 5-6 wasted possessions. Poor FT shooting, probably the worse of the season, lost us points. This alone keeps the game from going to OT.
I wonder if Jerikus Davis is healthy, as he has sat him for full games when he obviously has the ability to score and defend.
Lastly, after watching all the home games and most of the away games on the net, AKLR didn't look like the "last place team" in the conference. They matched up well against us. Their bigs are long and athletic and their guards are tough and physical.
