Nick Lee pitching Friday, Jack Burk on Saturday and TBA for Sunday
The players went in to the game last night thinking that this would be the game when the bats wake up. And the bats were worse than on Sunday. These guys come into our program knowing how to hit. For example, Monroe Moll batted .429 with 45 home runs in high school that played other competitive high schools. Todd Lott was drafted in the 19th round solelyfor his hitting ability and would have been drafted higher if he was more sign-able.
At this point I would almost rather no hitting coach and let these guys step in the box and do what they know how to do. Clean the slate on approach and start fresh.
Does anyone know any specifics on how Talbot is allegedly making this too complicated or messing up these hitters? Is it all just self-defeating low expectations at this point? What is the issue?
Well it is a young class. You saw Faecher hit the ball hard last night. You’ve seen flashes from Hayden. Windham has had a few good ABs. But overall, too many basic things are going wrong. I refuse to believe our kids “miss signs” that often. I refuse to believe, all of a sudden we can’t run the bases effectively. (Or even stand next to a base for the matter).
Too many obvious things are happening. Kids don’t trust him, don’t like him and don’t play for him. Very HUD-like in that regard.
We constantly talk about Deggs. Biggest difference with Deggs was, kids loved him, trusted him and played their asses off for him. Opposite of what we’re seeing now under Talbot.
I’ll also never forget the “you don’t have ballplayers here. I’ll go get you some.” Comment.. (I think someone reminded the board of that recently)..
Bottom line...they are poorly coached. That should not fall on Talbot's head. He isn't the head coach. Same as when all the defensive coordinators were fall guys for Hud. At the end we knew it was that Hud couldn't hack it. I don't have that same question about Robe. We know for a fact he can. But he isn't giving 100% to the team...or these issues wouldn't be happening. We shouldn't have to do this crap every year.
But...everyone will place the blame on Talbot, and on the next one Robe hires. Coaches beyond reproach are bad for everyone involved...except the coach beyond reproach.
I get what you’re saying. But Robe is not exactly 0’fer on hitting coach hires.
And the thing is, Robe is the opposite of a micromanager. He hires people that he believes in and let’s them coach. Which I’m obviously a supporter of.
On paper, Talbot was the correct hire. I don’t fault the hire at all. What I’m complaining about is the lack of someone to acknowledge the failure of the hire and move on from the hire. It’s obvious to anyone watching this team where the problems are. Another thing that I don’t like is that the players aren’t being asked what’s going on. Especially in baseball, I feel that player input is crucial. Also allowing players to feel like their opinion matters would fix that whole ‘trust’ issue.
I'm definitely not suggesting anything with this comment but Robe's contract is up at the end of this year (or next, can't remember exactly). Tony knows what he's got here now, and what he's got left in the tank. If he feels like this team is a total rebuild, maybe he hangs 'em up.
If what you're thinking is true, and he's just running out of steam, that could certainly be the case. I don't believe he's riding the clock though.
