That last statement is not necessarily true. We’ve had players come through this program the last few years who were great hitters everywhere except when they had Louisiana across their chest.
Sensley comes to mind. High school all American. Great hitter at LSUE. Mediocre in Lafayette. Hitting nearly .300 in the minors.
Why is Tony, a head coach for us since 1995, given a free pass for a team that is completely unprepared to play major college baseball? You go on to also say, our AD should not put any pressure on him to get off his duff and get his team straight, and that he would lose credibility in your eyes. Why? What will it take for this man to get what's coming to him?
Our slow starts have easily cost this team seeding in regionals several times. And yet...it's just ho hum. "Robe is ____ed and will fix it." "Robe knows what needs to be done." "Robe needs to fire Talbert." "We are young and the upper class men aren't playing like it." These are panacea for absolutely nothing, except enabling Tony to just schlep his way out of the gate...like this team always does. It's nothing new, and it's a direct reflection of a head coach content with the status quo of recruiting a higher level of talent than our peers, and systematically allowing them to flounder under the guise of the old baseball mantra, "can't win em all."
Not gonna defend the umps, but let’s learn from this and get better.
And with wood bats off better pitching. Hit .360 with 20 HR his last year at LSUE. I assumed he would be almost as good here. 20th rounder Todd Lott has completely disappeared.
We got hosed on the HR call and Cantrelle getting called out at 1st to end the game. Mediocre hitters don't get the benefit of the doubt at the plate. Same thing with those two calls yesterday.
If you think Tony is content, then obviously you don’t know the man. If you think he’s riding the clock to retirement, you obviously don’t know the man. However, I can’t answer why Talbot has not been replaced but he evidentially has his reasons. To be quiet honest I think Talbot knows hitting mechanics and can teach hitting. I think where he lacks is teaching approach and motivation. But ultimately Robe is in charge and the buck stops with him. He has never run from that either. He will never throw his coaches under the bus. If the veterans on this team would be carrying the weight on the offensive side, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. But we are relying on young kids with no “major college baseball” experience to carry us.
Simply put, the Cajuns are simply not good enough right now and may not be good enough most of the season no matter what the coaching staff does. That is especially true at the plate as I don't see them all of a sudden being able to hit nasty breaking pitches. You can hold the staff responsible for not having enough experienced talent ready to go where they would not have to be so dependent on youth. Nothing can be done in that regard now. You just have to focus on the actually trying to improve now so as you are playing good ball come sometime in April. It may be too late by then but their is always the conference tournament. Have to insure you get in that first and if struggles at plate continue there is no guarantee they qualify.
