PENSACOLA - For the second straight game, the IceGators outplayed the Ice Flyers, winning in overtime 2-1 Saturday night in Louisiana. Pensacola wasted no time ensuring this game wouldn?t be a shootout, scoring their first goal just 55 seconds into the contest. However, AJ Bucchino continued to solve the Ice Flyers, blanking them the rest of the way, just two days after shutting them out 6-0.
Joey Hughes scored the Ice flyers only goal at 0:55 in the first period. Matt Whitehead and Chris Rebernik shared in the points distributed on the play. Despite outshooting the IceGators 32-29, the goal would be the Ice Flyers? only. Meanwhile, a powerplay proved the impetus for the IceGators? only goal in regulation.
At 12:26 in the first period, Mark Hinz was cited for cross checking. Paul McBrien used the advantage to elude the goalie and tie the game at 12:40. Mike Omicioli and former Ice Flyer Trevor Karasiewicz assisted on the play. Karasiewicz would prove the difference-maker in the matchup.
Despite 41 shots fired in the second and third periods combined, Ryan Scott and his Louisiana counterpart Bucchino preserved the 1-1 tie. However, Trevor Karasiewicz needed just 14 seconds to end the game, gjving Louisiana the victory in overtime. Mike Omicioli earned his second point of the game on the play, and Jason Hamilton assisted as well. Ryan Scott made 27 saves in the loss.
The Ice Flyers will have to wait a week before they look for revenge: they play the IceGators in Louisiana again on Saturday, February 20.
