I had no idea this school even existed, but obviously they are doing something different. By the way, my understanding is that tuition is less than $1000.00 per year!

I’m very much in favor of DeVos’s push to expand school choice, but man does she say and think some boneheaded things. School curriculum should be crafted by educational experts, not politicians blinded by ideology. We owe that to our kids.
Couldn't be more wrong about the feds and common core.

I would rather people who use sound educational research, best practices and evidence-based decisions over a local schmo who believes "cavemen" hunted dinosaurs to extinction, doesn't know the difference between climate and weather and thinks the Earth is 6000 years old.
Way less opportunity for crazy if you keep the number of decision makers small.

And let me add to that. No amount of money can fix stupid or lack of morals or broken homes or lack of interest by a community in valuing education. The government, whether state or federal, usually does nothing well, other than stealing the citizens hard earned money. Nowhere in the US Constitution does it authorize the Department of Education. If a state consistently performs poorly in the area of education, a potential solution for the citizens of that state is to move to another state that performs better, i.e., we vote with our feet. Another potential solution is to get rid of the public education system. The private sector is much better equipped to handle education and by doing so, there would be more choices for citizens and thus, the prices would be reduced and affordable for all (simple, free market economics). Also, the private system would allow for the firing of teachers who perform poorly, unlike the public system.

Very inspiring. Hopefully, this is a trend that catches on in the rest of the state and continues.

I do think that Common Core is a little more nefarious than you think, but I agree that the pocket lining going on from both the government beauracrat and the private school factory owners are the real culprits here.

I will always believe that the more local you can control the system, the more accountability you can demand and receive from the system. A good first step would be the end of the Department of Education.
The majority of my family are teachers, not me, so I am all for paying more money for the GOOD teachers. The issue I see is that pretty much all teachers are treated and paid the same based upon seniority. And you have administrators who haven't a clue on how to hire and develop quality people.

Dr. Maggard is doing great work with a limited budget, give him more money and I trust him. Even with a boat load more money, Scott Farmer could not produce the same results as Maggard.

    Leadership matters.

No he is correct. Remember the Fed is, by law, not allowed to dictate state curriculum. But they do hold some of the purse strings to make their wishes known.

No. It's called choice. You know, the fundamental principles codified in our Constitution: freedom, liberty, etc.

From what I understand the biggest causes of poor school performance are things you can’t fix in a classroom. There is a distinct causal relationship between poor school performance and issues like poverty, broken homes, etc. If you’re a kid living in a poor household, your single mother has to work long hours to make ends meet, or you’re dealing with family issues at home, your schoolwork will obviously suffer.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the poorest states in the US also have the worst educational performance. And it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the US, which has more income inequality and higher poverty than almost every other first world country, would also have worse school performance despite spending more money than they do.

Great story and good for them but to follow this model in Lafayette Parish you would need 330 schools!

    Source?

    Here’s mine:

“Myth: The standards will be implemented through No Child Left Behind (NCLB), signifying that the federal government will be leading them.

Fact: The Common Core is a state‐led effort that is not part of No Child Left Behind or any other federal initiative. The federal government played no role in the development of the Common Core. State adoption of the standards is in no way mandatory. States began the work to create clear, consistent standards before the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which provided funding for the Race to the Top grant program. It also began before the Elementary and Secondary Education Act blueprint was released, because this work is being driven by the needs of the states, not the federal government. Learn more about the development process here.

Myth: The Common Core State Standards were adopted by states as part of the Race to the Top grant program.

Fact: Recognizing the strength of having high standards for all students, the federal government gave competitive advantage to Race to the Top applicants that demonstrated that they had or planned to adopt college- and career-ready standards for all students. The program did not specify the Common Core or prevent states from creating their own, separate college- and career-ready standards. States and territories voluntarily chose to adopt the Common Core to prepare their students for college, career, and life. Many states that were not chosen for Race to the Top grants continue to implement the Common Core.”

The government knows exactly what they want to do with education in this country and it’s working, rapidly.
