  1. UL Basketball Cajuns 'In position to make something happen'

After home victories last week over Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina, the UL basketball team is 14-3 overall.

It has won four in a row, all since the start of Sun Belt Conference play.

Heading into Saturday night’s game against ULM, the end of a three-game homestand, it also is 8-0 this season at the Cajundome.

“We’re off to the best start in 28 years for this program,” Marlin said, “so that’s encouraging."
    28 years!
    Wow!

    Andrew Toney, Kevin Figaro.

No wait. That was 38 years ago.

Kevin Brooks Sydney Grider and Aaron Mitchell. Started out 14-1 then lost 5 straight. Ended up 20-9 and losing to UNO in conference tournament. I was a youngster but Aaron Mitchell was my favorite player ever at the time

Aaron was as good of a person as he was a basketball player. I had a class with him in 1989ish. Good guy. Also one of my favorite players.

Cool that you brought him up. He was also my favorite Cajun.

Was a ball boy at the time but remember he was about as nice as can be. Looking back on it makes me appreciate him even more as a person now.

Was that the season Gryder got the seven point trip to win the game? Came down hit a three, got the inbound steal, and fouled while hitting another buzzer beater three. Finished the play and won the game on the foul shot.

That was the year UNO stopped the winning streak by winning a close game at the Dome. Sydney Grider paid them back by going over 30 at Lakefront Arena to break the Privateers home winning streak. Sydney once told me that the Tim Floyd UNO teams liked to hold people off the ball as they tried to get position. Refs in that conference at the time let them get away with it. Were games called back then like they are today Floyd would have been a 0.500 coach at best. Maybe that is why he recently resigned at UTEP as his Miners had a poor season last year and were off to a slow start this season. I never figured he would be one to hang it up during a season but I guess he was burnt out. Hard to win when your style is no longer allowed. When we last had an opening here he applied and I thought he would have been a good choice. He put out the word that he was not really that interested after interviewing and parlayed that story into the getting the UTEP job. Reality is that David Walker decided to go in a different direction more so than Floyd turned it down. As it turns out, maybe it is best he was not the selection.

I don't recall that ever happening. Earl Watkins beat Houston with several late three pointers early in Marty's career. The winner came on a last second half court shot and he thought we were ahead at the time. He left the team after that season due to being a terrible defensive player and having a poor attitude.

You need to talk to my son. He’s got photographic memory. People lose a lot of money to him making ridiculous sucker bets on things he remembers and can document.

We did win a game against a D2 opponent on a late 4 point play. Maybe that was the game you are referring to.
