Wrong on several fronts. First, there are big differences in programs that are building high rise complexes... and those that compete for skyscraper records. We are in the same competitive circle as Tech... but as it was stated... we have never approached our ceiling... they have been operating at their ceiling for decades. Our ceiling is much much higher than Tech. They have relatively no head space... we have untold head space untapped.
I used to use the analogy of a 4 cylinder engine versus an 8 cylinder engine. Tech has been getting as much out of a 4 cylinder engine as was humanly possible. It's both a criticism to their engine size... and a compliment to their 4 cylinder management system. We are an 8 cylinder engine that has operated on 2 cylinders. We added a 3rd cylinder as of late... and it almost shot off like a rocket. Compliments to our management improvement.
We aren't in the same league as the giants. We all know that. But to make statements that you're relevant only as a behemoth... and that everyone else just pretends their step stool is an elevator... is pure BS. And as a person that leans toward the importance of education in the grand scheme of things... if you honestly think the behemoths are pumping out great minds at a faster clip than the rest... you've been hanging out with the wrong people.
It doesn't require "spinning". It isn't the least bit odd. Coaching at Alabama, with Saban, is a huge career booster. Scott wasn't a seasoned DC. The challenge for Scott wasn't the state of our defense. It was his inexperience as a DC. I'm actually a little relieved. I'd rather we get someone with DC experience.
Our program, including defense, is in a state of rebuild... but everyone knows that. And I seriously disagree that our DC is "going to look like an idiot for a year or two". What exactly does that mean? I'm surmising that you think Scott got here, and got scared of what he thinks he has to work with. I think this move had way more to do with being recruited to Alabama... even if it was at a lower level.
Saban talked the majority of his coaches (at LSU and at Alabama) from taking mid major program head coaching positions. Do you really think being offered the DC position at UL is way above a position coaching position at Alabama? He may have used some of the same spin on Scott. He told several of his coaches when they were being courted by "G5s" to "be careful". Saban tells them that once they take that path and begin to fail... it is very hard to jump back on track. He is FOS and always says and does whatever it takes to manipulate coaches. But in reality... if you work as his slave for 4 years... your resume becomes gold.
If rumor is true about Ron Roberts the HC from Southeastern taking over as DC. That is a very good hire. He mentored Karl Scott and Pete Golden while they were with Southeastern. Dave Aranda is another former Roberts defensive coach.
Someone needs to teach me how to link a tweet. Cody Junot reporting that SLU's head coach Ron Roberts is in line to replace Karl Scott.
SOURCE: Louisiana is hiring Southeastern Louisiana coach Ron Roberts as defensive coordinator. Roberts, who has been a head coach since 2007, is a respected defensive mind who has mentored Dave Aranda, among others. https://t.co/3wSDBNPol4
