If he says “we need to protect the ball” - of course we do. And you study your ball carriers tendencies and coach better ball carrying. If you’re talking about stripping the ball - you damn well make it very clear that you don’t forego tackling to “attempt” a strip or punch to create a fumble. If a coach doesn’t seem to cover the fundamentals well, but salivates over a mystical “turnover battle” - you are not listening to a high IQ football coach.
The turnovers come from playing good, sound defense. Having players who can make plays, who know their jobs, and have been put in the right positions. Also, winning comes from that. So winning the turnover battle and winning the game flow from the same set of actions. They correlate. You cannot however attempt to win the game by winning the turnover battle. Attempting to create turnovers does not cause winning. Correlation is not causation.

Heck I think of a turnover as a stop with usually a great return or greatly improved field position. Sometimes even a scoring play. Never heard of a coach tell a defender not to jump on a fumble because it is better to try and field a punt from the opposition or play field goal defense.

Also, much more of a momentum shift. But we shouldnt have to relay solely on turnovers like we have in the past. We need a defense that can provide 3 and outs as well and put pressure on the QB. I am tired of relying on the big turnover.

That isn’t the point. No one EVER said that a turnover isn’t a defensive stop. And obviously they’re the greatest of the bunch. We had a former coach that constantly talked about winning the turnover battle. It wasn’t balanced with the other 7 extremely important fundamentals - that we regularly sucked at. I’m going to say it... and I mean it. It was a distraction... a ploy... to pump up fans. And we bought it for a while. But it got old. The other 7 fundamentals not being up to par makes “we need to win the turnover battle” get really old... really fast.

But we do have knuckleheads that think when you’re tired of hearing “Turnover battle! Turnover battle!” and you state it, that you no longer understand the value of turnovers.

Relying on turnovers are the hallmark of overly aggressive defenses that mask their weaknesses. Sound defensive football will create turnovers, but are unnecessary to the cause.

The number 1 cause of an interception is pressure by the defense. It's a rare thing, not seen in these parts for a long time.
