Thread: 2018 Football Staff

The odds of a Sun Belt defense "stopping people" are slim. You're more likely to bend without breaking and try to force turnovers and field goals, than you are to just shut someone down all game.

With the spread offenses being so potent, it's hard even for power 5 teams to have classic great defenses.

Getting stops and shutting someone down is totally different. I’ve watched App St stop people for 4 years now. (This year injuries kinda hurt them up front but still).

I don’t expect to be the 85 bears but I absolutely do not want to hear turnovers as being stops. We need to line up and stop offenses with some consistency.

Is this really a thing? All defenses try to stop people. Most just don’t have the personnel to do it. Even in our conference you have to be able to stop the run. Last year we couldn’t so we looked inept. Right now we do not have the personnel to stop the run, so it will be interesting to see how the staff addresses this.

You are right to a point, but you can have a defense that takes something away from the offense. The few times we have had success on D, it was because we had an active front that disrupted the running game. This is achievable.

Is what “a thing”, coaching turnovers over sound defense? Yes, it is a thing.

Pass coverage requires talent run stopping requires coaching

I know a lot of TT engineers through work... and every one I've met (big TT fans) is pretty cool. I would say they've been a lot like us prior to Leach - felt like they live in the shadow of A&M and UTA. If we were on a "let's bash TT" run... most of what we'd post applies to us as well.

I like the Toney hire a lot. I would like for our secondary to understand zone coverage schemes for change.

He wasn't running their defense. You have a head coach and a DC you have to listen to. Napier may recognize a good mind for defense and a tremendous recruiter in LA and TX... and until I see differently... it could be a great combination. I'm looking at it from 50,000 feet... and my lense is foggy. Napier is seeing it up close and personal with good eyes and a football brain.

If Napier and Basin are good with it... we are all good with it!

Apparently he went back to school to graduate. Was coaching at a high school in California in 2008.
