While our recruiting has obviously had some issues, I think the biggest failure of the Hud years is in player development. We never seemed to "coach" anyone up. I can't think of any skill players who were significantly better when they left then when they came in. Even Eli was basically born as Eli, it's not like Hud made him.
I want a coach who can not only recruit, but can more importantly one who can COACH.
Have we hired a coach yet because it seems everyone else except Tennessee has lol!😂😂😂😂
Bradleys stats are nearly identical.
Hoggins improved, but was never more than a spot player.
Horst and Winthrow are not skill players.
Light foot is a good one.
I can't think of many, if any skill guys who came in and in 4 years were significantly better. We haven't developed anyone, that's why Hud declined.
I got the impression that many times, the players didn’t know what to do when they were on the field. Player development is critical to being successful.
Many athletes get better through maturation and individual determination... where it has little to do with coaching development. As for Hud's recruiting... he was good at identifying athletes. And it showed at certain positions. I think he put a lot of stock in his camps. I think it cost him with developing pipelines with certain high school coaches and athletes.
I never quite understood why we weren't better defensively. We had peak athletes on defense in some years... and they made all of the difference. It was never a platoon of well schooled defensive football players.
As for his offenses... we've had some great skill players under Hud. He counted entirely on them. He did not school up offensive lines and schemes to work as a ground gaining system. He counted on exceptional skill players to carry the load regardless of how many bullets were hitting them.
But we're on to another coach...
