Thread: RISE & Shine on Louisiana's Campus

Louisiana Campus RISE & Shine on Louisiana's Campus

A couple of updates for those who are interested in the on-going construction projects on campus:

At the last ULS monthly meeting the demolition of the old maintenance shops, shipping/receiving buildings, etc., along S. Campus Dr., as well as all the structures at the Youth/Dog Park along St. Julien, was approved. For those who don't know, those 'buildings' along S. Famous are beyond decrepit, and it's a wonder they are still standing at all.

The news I got......which was not 'official' and no timeframe given......was that this is all part of the continuation of the master plan: after everything above is demo'd, new housing for married/grad students will go in the Dog Park area, as well as behind the Red Zone on Johnston. Once that is done they will demo the current Cajun Village and add new housing there as well. Both of these projects will greatly increase on-campus housing, which I think is extremely important in getting and keeping our alumni 'attached' to our school.

Attached is the part of Master Plan where this addressed, as well as another one that proposes making St Julien tie directly into Rex St, which I think would be awesome...another entry into campus would be nice.

For those that want the cliff notes.

Will add 600 beds bringing total to nearly 3800. 5000 sq ft of retail space. Boomer math..... 100 million dollar investment. (98 mil actual)

Campus is becoming more impressive every year.

This is excellent news! I am proud of the new on campus housing. It’s much better than when I was there. I like that we are gaining nearly 5,000 square feet of retail space too.

If one was interested in opening a retail location at this apartment who should they contact?

Here is the list so far...

A new development, called University Plaza, will soon start construction between Lamar Street and McKinley Street. The current buildings on this block are the former Gallagher's/Line Backers, a C-Store, and a few residential lots. See below for plan layout photos.

University Plaza will be home to about 11 tenants, 3 of which have already been confirmed. Those tenants are:

    • Yobe Frozen Yogurt

    • Zeus

    • Dick's Wings and Grill

Dick's Wings and Grill is a Florida-based franchise that serves much of what you'd expect from a wingery & grill. Most of you already know about Yobe Yogurt, and Zeus. If not, then do yourself a favor, click their names in the list. You will be lead to their sites for more info!

The new development has several proposed retail locations, as well as a grocery location. It will also have plenty of customer parking, but ultimately, it is designed for the college crowd that commute by way of walking or biking. Almost all of the vehicle parking will be behind the development — leaving the front for bicycle parking, and appeal.

For more information on this development, get in touch with Charles Cornay.

This is a different development from the one listed above......this one is a private development, in contrast to the Lewis/Johnston, which is on school property.

But it too is a very important one: that side of the block of between Lamar and McKinley is pretty bad, and desperately needs improvement. Part of the master plan states we need to have zoning around campus, to ensure that landlords keep up their property and invest in it as they should. It's a downright shame to see all of the the trashy, derelict properties immediately adjacent to campus.

Since it's eating the space where the current RedZone is located, I'm assuming that will be the retail space referenced in the planning?

Yeah: although I've not heard anything official about who the tenants will be, etc., I'm very sure there will be a new and expanded RedZone as part of the retail space.

One of the things I found interesting was 632 parking space for 600 new beds. I would have thought there would be addition parking but that may fall within the parameters on how they estimate parking for apartments.
