1. You aren't "tarnishing memories". Even if Bozo the Clown were our coach, we'd have athletes to respect. Respecting some of the athletes has nothing to do with whether the fan base should begin pressuring the leadership to plan for a coaching change. Do we run a dumpster fire of a program... under coaches that don't have it... just to embrace an athlete or four?
2. Mike is right... that this thread and bashing the coach is pointless... except to vent. And that is the sad reality of our existence. Even when we need to dump a coach... we can't. Hud could have gone 0-12 last year... and be set to go 0-12 this year... and Mike would be right about this thread. But it in no way invalidates the examination of Hud's 7 years and where we are right now.
3. "We weren't supposed to win last night or next week" is precisely why we are all mad. When Hud came in 7 years ago... and blew reams of "sleeping giant" smoke up our rear ends... who thought we'd give up 60+ to Tulsa in year 7... and have fans defend it?
4. Unless one of you has the power to actually shut down the year and regroup... threads like this are perfectly fine. Those of you wearing lace around your underwear need to stop being frightened by upset fans. We aren't storming Cajun Field with pitch forks. This is a forum to vent and discuss the disgust of our football coaching ineptness.
5. And once again... there is no distinction between "he can't coach... but he can recruit" and "he can't recruit... but he can coach". That's like saying "he can make the car go fast... but he can't drive". Coaches that can coach don't have trouble recruiting... and coaches that recruit don't have trouble coaching. Keep that in your fan playbook... and it will keep you from making dumb statements about college coaches.
We've been getting heated up about Hud... and there's no reason we shouldn't. He's choosing the staff and the athletes with that staff. It's on him. All of it. Hud barely edged out a win over SLU at Cajun Field... and gave up 60+ to Tulsa. Year 7 fact.
Indeed. If the defense has gaping holes because of graduation or injury, it doesn't matter. The head coach is supposed to see those things coming and prepare (as in recruit) for them, especially a head coach making $1MM a year.
Having said that, I don't see Hud getting canned at the end of this year because I believe our offense will win enough games for us even if the defense never comes around.
Looking forward I'd much rather see our AD structure the next head coach's pay package based mostly on performance bonuses. Crappy year, crappy pay. Exceptional year, exceptional pay. It's done all the time with salesmen and upper management of businesses, why not with a head coach?
great analysis.. And for the record, I don't remember anyone who said he needs to be fired NOW. We are who we are and our $$$ coffers does not support that action. I along with a big number of fans just think that at the end of the season a change is needed. As j1m stated, at the end of year 7, is this where we at? Think about it. NOT 1 conference championship. Not one top 25 ranking LIKE TROY DID last year, and the last few years have not been all smiles and warm fuzzies. 7 years is long enough period to judge on stay the course or change direction. Now the fact we probably don't even have the money to move on from Hud at the end of the season just means our football program will be stymied even further. We are in a bad spot.
Central Michigan beat a P5 school yesterday on the road.
UTSA beat a P5 school yesterday on the road. And UTSA has only had a football program for 6 yrs.
Louisiana has beaten a FCS school and hasn't beaten a P5 school in eons. Hell, we struggle in a crappy conference. All this for 1.1 mil a year? Holtz at LA Tech makes 550.000.
Venting over. Enjoy your Sunday!
You find the money to buy him out. The last thing you want to do is revert back to the authement years and allow fan support to dwindle down so much it takes you years to bring it back. Let him finish out the year and evaluate then but another loosing season is unacceptable.
Oh! Middle Tennessee beat a P5 school on the road yesterday.
It's a great concept... I just don't know how well it plays with head football coaches. I think most are loaded with pay incentives... but very little "pain-gain" language. Even programs with large sums of money, and all the resources in the world to structure a performance based contract... end up in stiff payout clause trouble when the coach doesn't pan out.
The reality of it is... we're probably going to ride out Hud's contract with Hud. He would have to go 3-8 this year... and have a losing season mid way through next... before it would implode enough to trigger a buyout/firing. But that does not mean that the administration shouldn't be put on full alert as fans get disgusted by the product out of this program.
Every single one of us thought we had been delivered six years ago. It's pretty obvious to all of us now that we had not. The scary thing to me is that we seem destined to be a mediocre G5 football program. As we continue to be passed up by programs like USF, we now see programs like those at App St and WKU that seem to have us in the rear view mirror. There's no way we'll ever be in the Big 12 or any other P5 conference. Why is it that we continue to be so incompetent when it comes to building a viable G5 program?
We have all of the essentials to be a top G5. Hud blew the chip stack he built up in his first four years here. I don't know why. I haven't completely figured out how. But he did. We're the small stack at the G5 table right now. I'm becoming pretty solidly convinced that until we replace the player that represents us at the table... we aren't going to win many more hands.
Passive fans are worse than over aggressive fans.
