Thread: Houston high school guard Wesley ends recruiting, commits to Cajuns

I don't think he was saying he'd be happy with a team of undersized guards. Clearly you need a balanced team. You wouldn't win with a team of only Shack's either. To me he was talking competitive nature, skill set, and integrity.

In most sports a good big man usually outdoes a good little man. The reason Spudd Webb name rises up is because so few good little men make it big time.

And I wasn't being literal either. My point was to his natural ability. If I have 12 C+ players, whatever position they might play, whatever size they might be, we're still losing a lot of games.

I was part of the vocal few the expressed support for our results last year, but it's time to take a major step forward. New crib, influx of talent, new regime, new money coming in...
I know this: My calendar is being cleared for March. I think we'll have some traveling to do.
Point taken... and you are correct. But if you want to build a team, take the most talented guys around regardless of character. If you want to build a program, you have to look at character as well as talent. Of course, no kid will be perfect but ...

I think Marlin, in some ways, prevented Kasey from being the player he was capable of. One of the things I dislike about Marlin's coaching style is his quick hook for shooters. A shooter has to get into a rhythm and if Kasey or Register missed a shot, they would automatically look to the bench, knowing that they would probably get yanked. So I think Kasey could have been a better basketball player but I dont think you will find a better kid.
While I usually support the coach, and I support Marlin, I totally agree that if a trip to the Dance doesn't happen this year, we might need to move in a different direction. On paper, this looks to be the best team we have had in a while. There are some things that can happen with injuries, team chemistry, etc but its time to take the next step.

A trip to the dance should not be the only criteria. Finishing 8th and having a four game winning streak to the dance shouldn't keep his job. Conversely finishing third or better and not make the dance shouldn't be cause to lose his job.

Getting to the dance is certainly one of the most important components but by no means is it the do or die.

How about finishing 8th, winning the Sunbelt tourney and winning a game in the Dance?

That wouldn't be a good season, only a good thing that is actually meaningless. The regular season champions rarely go. So it's really a combination of superlatives that would be a vote of confidence. Have an outstanding regular season and get to the dance. Win a game there and move on.

You simply cannot overlook an 8th place finish with a mature and allegedly talented team.

I would agree that 8th would be a disaster but winning that game would mean a good bump in $. I by no means would think that would be a good season however.

This coming year is a win-win for everyone involved. If Marlin does what many thinks he'll do this year, it's a big giant stepping stone toward future success. If he can't win with this roster, we'll be looking for a new coach. Plenty reasons for everyone to buy season tickets this year

The attached article describes the AAU July evaluation period for Boise State. Coach Marlin liked the article on Twitter and said the process sounds familiar. I bet AAU play was what we based our offer to the Wesley kid on.

I watched a little bit of the 30 for 30 "Baltimore Boys" last night about Dunbar High School. There was a great quote in there regarding Mugsey Bouges that reminded me of this thread. "When it comes to a point guard the only height that matters is the 4 inches above the eyes".
From the little bit I have seen of Wesley on video I like his game, he could be another Jay Wright type player.
