MaxPreps indicated he played at Edison High his junior year and Roosevelt High his senior year. The junior year highlights actually looked more impressive despite his stats being much lower than what he put up his senior year.. Gym was full when he played at Edison and sparse crowds at Roosevelt. He may have gone to Roosevelt so as to be more of a featured player.
I think it is difficult for novices like us to determine if a player is weak and not explosive by looking at a 2 minute video. Granted the guys who are making these assessments may be much more qualified than I to do so. My judgment is the guy is raw, will benefit greatly from a redshirt year, has a very high upside, and may be starting his sophomore year which will be his third in the program. I repeat I am in no way qualified to offer a meaningful opinion but I threw one out none the less.
Mike talent can be developed. Coach Nelson did a study in which he successfully predicted 80% of the great USL basketball teams of 70-72 starters based on reaction time alone. At the time Babe Ruth had one of the best reaction times measured.
If your reaction time is great other things can be taught, trained, and developed. Also size is God given.
Thanks for the research and clarification. I think we can agree that regardless of high school numbers he was recruited as a project. A chance we can afford to take with the current depth. I'm assuming Stalcup is returning because I haven't heard otherwise. He provides the depth as a big to where the redshirt option for McCoy shouldn't be an issue at all.
I don't think their is any question McCoy is redshirting and I do believe as well that Stalcup is coming back. You also have to remember we are adding 6'8" Mizzou transfer JaKeenan Gant and a 6'6" big guard in Malik Marquetti. These two coupled with Stalcup, Washington (who will be departing next year) as well as Justin Miller and Jerkius Davis give us some great depth inside. McCoy will still not be expected to have extended minutes until his sophomore year at best. Hopefully we can move him in slowly next year and be ready for sure to step up the following year. One thing is for sure, you can not teach size. Being 6'8" and only an incoming freshman, hopefully he grows a little in the next year or two and improves his offensive ability.
