    The Cajuns currently have the following RPI breakdown .

    WP -> .85294
    OWP -> .50616
    OOWP -> .52914
    --
    Base RPI -> .59860
    RPI Bonus -> .0056
    --
    Adjusted RPI -> .60420 (#31 ranking)

    Doing a little projection .

    The Cajuns finishing 14-0 would yield an Adjusted RPI (using results as of today) of .64156 . good for an RPI ranking of #15 against the 4/10 RPI rankings . very close to #14.

    The Cajuns finishing 13-1 with the loss being to Texas A&M (no RPI bonus) yields a #15 ranking.

    12-2 finish (losses to Texas A&M and say . Texas State) . #16 ranking.

    11-3 finish (losses to Texas A&M and twice to Texas State) . #19 ranking.

    Two things of interest. It looks like the Cajuns are one of only about three teams in the country to play zero neutral site games. Obviously this is because we hosted so many of our own tournaments. Just wonder how much the numbers would have shifted if those had been neutral site games vs. home games. I also wonder how much Coach Mike's health played into any decision to limit the travel this season. Never a bad thing to get more home games except for how it might effect your RPI.

    There are a number of teams ahead of us who's records aren't great against the top RPI teams (i.e. Georgia). That could play in our favor come selection time.

    This has no effect on the RPI.

    Now something that does have an effect on the Cajuns' RPI .

    Not playing the two games vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi would have the Cajuns at #26. Toss the (2) vs. Alcorn State, (1) vs. MVSU, (1) vs. Maryland and (1) vs. Dartmouth and you are right in the thick of it at #18.

    So we are inviting a bunch of fairly mediocre Southern teams in with a few poor Northern teams while the PAC-12 is out West playing each other with a few Mountain West and other mid to high caliber teams.

    It certainly doesn't take much to change the landscape. Would be nice to get back to where we play two home tournaments and a premier tournament at a neutral site to balance things out.

    Pardon my ignorance, but i have looked at the RPI's on this board for years and what do they use these numbers for in the softball world. I can only assume for post season site scheduling or something along those lines? Please, oh guru (Brian), enlighted me!

    It is no different than basketball or baseball. It is one of the tools used to help determine which teams are given at large selections for the post season. It also plays a part in how teams are seeded for post season.

    Cajun90,

    What is the ranking magic number you have to be under to be considered safe in postseason?

    There isnt one. Depends on your body of work. It is poossible to have a decent RPI and a not so great record for example.
