Thread: One shining moment? Not for Robichaux's Cajuns

  1. UL Baseball One shining moment? Not for Robichaux's Cajuns

As his Ragin' Cajuns prepared to head to Coastal Carolina for a Sun Belt Conference weekend series against the defending national champions, UL baseball coach Tony Robichaux expressed appreciation for what it took coach Gary Gilmore's Chanticleers to pull off what they managed to in 2016.

In all honesty Fresno State was the bigger "story". CC has balled for years on the diamond. That Fresno State team pulled it out of their ___.

Fresno had made 3 prior trips to Omaha. Their baseball team had "balled out" on a whole different level than Coastal Carolina had.

Agree. That was the greatest Cinderella story in my life time (I was not alive for Miracle on Ice)

    Look at the facts:

They entered the WAC tournament at 33-27

They were the #4 seed in their regional. Since only four teams play in each of 16 regionals, this is the equivalent of a team seeded #13 or lower in the NCAA basketball tournament.

No #4 seed had ever advanced to the College World Series. By contrast, no #13 or lower seed has ever made the "Elite 8" of the men's basketball tournament, which is arguably equivalent to the eight-team College World Series.

Six times in the NCAA tournament, including three times in the College World Series, they faced elimination with a loss. They won all six times.

They won a total of 10 tournament games against six different teams ranked in the top 20. ESPN pointed out that in terms of the NCAA basketball tournament, Fresno State's run would be equivalent to a 13 seed beating a 4 seed in the first round, a 5 seed in the second round, a top seed in the Sweet 16, a second seed in the Elite 8, another top seed in the Final Four, and still another 2 seed for the championship.

Just to add to your story CajunJack, If they don't win the WAC tournament, they never make the tournament.

Absolutely, although the program as whole is better than Coastal, what that particular team did was pretty amazing.

Were those previous 3 appearances in recent history? Fresno fell backwards into the NCAA's that year. CC has been much better over the last five years than what Fresno was in relation to when they won it all.

And I believe they lost their #1 starter at some point in the season.

They were in regionals 14 of the 20 seasons leading up to their national title. Including 2 appearances in Omaha. They weren't great during that particular regular season, but they were a very good program.
