Louisiana star running back Elijah McGuire is waiting for an outside opinion before he makes a decision whether he'll be running against Sun Belt defenders or NFL defenders next season. Coach Mark Hudspeth said Wednesday that he met...
UL running back Elijah McGuire plans to submit name for 2016 NFL Draft evaluation
I do too....but only because we didn't throw to him that much to be considered a slot receiver prospect. I hope he stays and we run an offense that shows off his receiving ability. That's what will get the NFL's attention. There's a much lower premium on RB's in the NFL these days....only the very top of the heap will get drafted in the early rounds.
Yep, his stock is low right now...2 consecutive shoulder injuries, didn't pan out as a pure RB, we didn't throw to him enough, RB value has lowered over the years, Leaving early from the SBC after the year he had isn't smart IMO. If he decides to go I hope he is fully prepared to go the UDFA route...after the 4th round it's almost better so you can pick the right situation and the right offense. Teams do not hesitate to cut 5th,6th or 7th round picks.
It appears that some of you may be making too much of this. It is simply a prudent thing for Eli to do. I would expect him to investigate this option. The fact of the matter is he didn't have a great year (numbers indicating otherwise be damned). I love the kid too, but I would be surprised if indications came back that he would go in rounds 1-3. Just not in the cards this year. He would have had a better chance of that last year. I hope the kid rebounds and blows up next year. I think we will have a chance to see it, because he isn't coming out this year.
There were other candidates that Hud could have smashed into the wall like he did Eli. If you're so simple-minded (meaning Hud) that you actually thought we had a power run offense... it didn't matter who we stuck in that role. Zo would have failed behind this OL and the 8 defensive players stacked up ready for him as well.
Our offensive talent this past year was made for opening up run lanes for our scat backs, by intelligently designed passing attacks. Hud couldn't shift out of what he wished he could do, to what he should have done.
I'm hoping for Eli to return next year... and Hud to get a lot smarter offensively. That could be a highly productive combination for us... and hopefully Eli's draft stock.
Mind of a 20 year old:
1) ANY draft position is better than being run into a wall for another year!
2) This was just a bad year. I trust my HC, I'm just testing the market to see where I stand.
3) I've been done with this ____ since Akron. These fools are doomed. Later peeps.
4) I realize I need to shine in order to make money coming out of the SBC. I'll stay to improve my stock, even though this coaching staff is ____ing up.
Take your pick.
Elijah has been nothing but a standup young man. 2 or 4 is the smart choices. But you can tell the man was frustrated as a man could be with the year he had. What's insane is...his numbers weren't bad. But we all know what he is capable of...and I'm sure he knows as well. I expect him back in a Cajun uniform. Hopefully someone learned a lesson.
We all know Elijah is a good back but with a mediocre year on a bad team, he doesn't stand out among any of the running backs. Not to mention running backs go later in the draft. I think he comes back and has a great season.
This is a good way to get as jump on marketing your name for the 2017 draft.
