....so you're trying to say inflation has killed the basketball program? Explain...

I would call it externally influenced escalation rather than inflation.

More power conference schools got interested in basketball and the upped the ante. TV networks got more involved and featured the marquee names during the season and postseason for ratings purposes. The rich got richer.

Damn, I always thought it was the death penalty thing that set us back a bit.

Therefore, it's not just a UL thing.

this thought crossed my mind yesterday when reading about HUD and the one million and any raises for marlin.... seems the problem transcends UL, look at mlb baseball too(or im sure anywhere). often times people are paid for what they did in the past rather than what they are going to do or are currently doing. not sure if this is good or bad, nor do I have a solution if this is a problem, just an observation.
I remember a player signing the big deal (based off of past numbers) then gets hurt, and actually made more money while not playing.
maybe a pay pool for stats, and you cash in your current numbers regardless of seniority? 100,000 for a HR, etc, etc, 250K for a football coach per win, etc,etc...just a guess at the #'s...

We paid Hud so we could keep Hud, everyone here agreed that it was the best thing to do at the time. The problem is not $1 Million/Year, the problem is the buy out.

how many other professions besides coach have a buyout? I don't have a buyout. CEO in some cases- but also is more like a retirement benefit, maybe law office partner - but that would be different since a partner is a part owner.

It is part of being on a contract. They used to not be as expensive as they are now, really started getting high in the early/mid 2000's thanks to Auburn and Tuberville being linked to LSU hire. The big schools have no problem paying them. They will do what ever they have to do to keep a good coach and to win.
