A few things RPI related and scheduling ...

#1 Regarding scheduling and the need to fill an opponent for a weekend ... there are alternatives to scheduling teams that are going to inflict significant damage on your RPI. If you are absolutely in a bind and cannot find one of the myriad of D1 teams (especially northern teams) to fill a weekend ... go the non-D1 route. There are many non-D1 teams that will provide an equal or better challenge vs. a Saint Peter's ... without the RPI damage.

You are afforded as many as three non-D1 games without an RPI penalty. The fourth non-D1 game will result in an RPI penalty of .0022. You can then play a fifth non-D1 game without additional penalty. But the sixth non-D1 game will cost you an additional .0022 plus .0022 for each non-D1 game after six. Now ... you will want to ensure you win these games ... because there is a .0022 penalty for each home loss (.0017 for neutral site loss ... .0011 for road loss). A penalty is not assessed for a tie.

As such, scheduling a non-D1 opponent in lieu of Saint Peter's for a weekend series would result in no damage to the RPI (no effect at all), provided you take care of business on the field. Even if you did lose a game, the penalty is considerably less severe than adding a bad D1 team to your SOS (RPI).

#2 The Cajuns' RPI currently sits at ...

WP -> .67544
OWP -> .54006
OOWP -> .49547
SOS -> .52520

RPI -> .56276

This is actually an RPI ranking of about #63 ... not the #56 shown in Warren Nolan.

Warren Nolan has a mistake in his RPI. For some reason he is excluding LIU-Brooklyn (Long Island in his system) from Saint Peters' results. Saint Peter's lost that game at home. Strangely enough, he has the game result on the Long Island page ... but incorrectly as a non-D1 game. I sent him a correctional note.

#3 If you were to exclude the Saint Peter's weekend series from the RPI calculations you would have ...

WP -> .63000
OWP -> .64808
OOWP -> .49639
SOS -> .59751
--
RPI -> .60563 (RPI ranking of #22)

Of course, the effect of adding Saint Peter's to the Cajuns' RPI is rather dramatic at this stage since they have an OWP contribution of .00000 and not many games have been played. But at the end of the season the damage will still be real, unless Saint Peter's can muster a somewhat respectable winning percentage (well above the .19231 of 2016).

We will see ... but I do not have the same take. I think they are going to lose a lot of games this year.

I think against a mediocre team, Harris would have been tagged for several runs in the first two innings.

I think it's very unlikely they will have the horrible record they had last year - that is based on my seeing them improve in front of my eyes this weekend, the perspective of player's fathers and the unlikelihood that a team's record could be THAT bad consistently (especially in baseball when the worst team can beat the best team in a given game).

That's said, they are not very good. I'm guessing that .500 is their ceiling. Let's hope they get there
