I'm thinking that with the age and transfers coming in next year, it will be make or break next year.
Make would be NCAA tourney with respectable seed and showing, preferably with a win in the Dance.
Other possibility for a Make would be winning the conference regular season and entering the SBC Tourney as the #1 seed with respectable showing in the NIT (after losing late in conference tourney). Anything short of one of those two achievements next hear... I think he's done.
Just my $.02. NO inside information or scoop.
I'm thinking this is year seven, year seven without a regular season championship, without finishing in top two in regular season, without anything but mediocre accomplishments against weak competition overall.
Yes, by all means give him another year of mediocrity those three transfers and a freshman are going to brake him. Lord knows we haven't had a good team since Robet Lee's first year. Anyone care to recall how long ago that was? What is another year?
John, I agree with you in that bringing in better talent is the key to improving the program. Some of us may have overrated the ability of this year's squad in non-conference play. However, next year's recruiting is done due to three transfers sitting out this year and one early period signee. I have no idea how those guys will pan out but I do know one of the transfers (inside player named Gant from Missouri) was a top 50 player coming out of HS. I also know the early period signee scored 54 points in a game last week. None of that means squat as to being able to predict what they will do here. Point is our next opportunity to bring in new talent will be next November in the early signing period.
As far as the new AD evaluating the coach, that will occur. However he will not make that determination until after next season no matter how many times people here say a change should be made now. I am not sure how many years are left on the contract but I think it may be two years remaining after this one.
I get your point and it's hard to argue. I think the new AD should sit down and talk to the players (including the transfers) after the season - and heavily weight their opinions in regards to another year.
I would hate to see a coaching change with a loss of some or all of these transfers. We desperately need a consistently winning basketball program.
With the "new facility" and financial backing, there is no reason the Cajuns shouldn't be a viable contender for the SBC title EVERY year.
You and I use to go at it in regards to Marlin....And with time, unfortunately you have been right.
Unless we make a serious run in conference tournament that leads to big dance appearance & win or close game, I would think best thing to do is part ways and let new coach start laying ground work with next years deep roster.
Can we afford that? Probably not.
