I am trying to look more positively at this class, especially the OL. In the past we have some huge but really overweight guys who were not as athletic as we would have liked. Many of these OL did not work out for us. This years OL group is a little different. These guys are leaner (Gardner 270, Rubio 250 and Vallot 295) and have intangibles that I feel are very important (Rubio is a powerlifter and Vallot is a wrestler). You might say we are recruiting whoever is left but maybe we have changed the way we are thinking about OL recruits. I am interested to see how these OL prospects develop and perform.
I noticed Spencer Gardner not only played basketball and baseball in high school, but also made all-state 1st team in baseball and all-district in basketball.
I think any "big guy" can play high school basketball because at that level your size gives you a huge advantage, but baseball takes a lot more timing and coordination. He may be one to watch in the next few years.
This has to sting for you guys. I don't think Hud is a good recruiter, now that all of the former coach players are gone. He can't hide it anymore, his recruiting skills are coming to light and its not looking good for you guys. When you can't recruit a decent qb from La, Tx, or Miss then yea that is not a good sign. Throw in the fact that you lost to us and Tulane, that leaves you guys really competing for recruits with the lower level schools like a Mcneese or Nicholls state. At this point I think Grambling is out recruiting you guys now. They are loading up.
Yes it really stings. We lost a few 2 star recruits and will fill them with other 2 star recruits. Recruiting is a funny game, very few people here were excited about the guys we brought in, but when they flip then it is a big deal.
Anyone with a pair of eyes can see we have done very poorly in recruiting for several years. At the end of the day HUD being mean to a player or calling too may dive plays will not be his undoing. His inability to develop a QB and recruit south La will be.
