why cant sixers just "call him up" and have him be on the sixers? why would a trade be needed?
The 76ers could do that. However, if they find out another team is interested in bringing him to their club, the 76ers may want to call him up first and then trade him. Even if they get a 2nd round pick they would be getting value. From what I understand, any team could call him up as long as they signed him to their permanent roster. That would guarantee him the minimum NBA salary or at least a pro-rated share. I don't think other clubs can sign someone in his situation to a 10 day contract however. Those are about to be allowed in the NBA. They are every season around this time.
